Description

Perform a semi-skilled, entry level position responsible for the maintenance, repair, and construction of water services, mains, meters, fire hydrants, valves, and other aspects of water supply to the customers. This position performs work on sewer laterals and mains and other aspects of the sanitary sewer system. This position requires advancement to the position of Operator I within two years from date of hire.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Operates automotive and other equipment in the construction, repair, and maintenance of the water distribution/sewer collection system.
  • Performs the repair/maintenance of water mains, services, meters, valves, hydrants, and associated appurtenances.
  • Performs the cleaning of sewer manholes, checks for infiltration, flushes sewer lines, when needed; performs locating of service laterals for new construction and the installation of service laterals.
  • Assists in the repair of breaks in the main sewer lines, installation of gravity sewer extensions, and rodding out of lines.
  • Assists in the maintenance of the lift station force mains and other aspects of this area.
  • Assists in the location of lines for new construction.
  • Produces written reports (with pertinent control data), as needed.

Additional Requirements
  • CERTIFICATES:
    Must pass state exam for FDEP Level III Water Distribution Technician within two years from date of hire.
  • LICENSES:
    Florida Driver's License Class A CDL with tanker endorsement required. Will allow a two-year timeframe from date of hire to obtain Florida CDL Class

Physical Demands

While performing the duties of this position, the employee is regularly required to stand; walk; climb or balance and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must be able to work in trenches, while using hand tools and other equipment, often in awkward positions. The employee must use significant torque exertion to turn valve wrenches, fire hydrant valves, and other wrenches.

The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. The incumbent is exposed to risks such as fumes or airborne particles; and is frequently exposed to wet and/or humid conditions; moving mechanical parts; and outside weather conditions.

Work Environment

This position is part of New Smyrna Beach Utilities Emergency Management Team and, as such, shall be expected to perform all duties that are assigned during an emergency management operation. Any additional compensation, above the normal weekly salary shall be outlined in the Human Resources Manual or Collective Bargaining Agreement. Failure to appear to perform emergency management assignment and to work assigned shifts as scheduled by NSBU’s Emergency Incident Commander or individuals designated by the General Manager/CEO to assign such functions may result in disciplinary action up to and including termination.
