Position: UTILITIES TECHNICIAN II (WASTEWATER)

Performs a variety of skilled and technical work in the maintenance and repair of the City’s wastewater lift stations and sewer collection systems. Works under the general direction of the Public Works Director, or assigned designee.

This position is considered an emergency/disaster position. During emergency conditions, all City employees are automatically considered emergency service workers. City employees are subject to being called to work in the event of a disaster, such as a hurricane, or other emergency situation, which requires that the employee be ready, willing, and able to report to work during emergencies and/or disasters of any kind, notwithstanding any other commitments the employee may have and be able perform emergency services duties, as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent. Two years progressively responsible experience in wastewater operations, or any equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Possess a valid Florida Commercial Driver's License (CDL) certification, Class B, or obtain the CDL certification within six (6) months of employment.
  • Must also possess the National Incident Management System (NIMS) IS-700 within 30 days of employment and the ICS-100 within 90 days of employment. There may be additional NIMS required, which will be scheduled by your Supervisor.
Responsibilities

Performs highly responsible technical work in the maintenance and repair of wastewater lift stations and the wastewater collection/distribution systems.

Removes, repairs and installs pump motors, valves, and sewer laterals. Maintains and repairs wastewater collection and force main lines.

Reads and interprets drawings, electrical schematics, time clocks, flow meters, flow gauges, blueprints, construction plans, schedules, and oversees wastewater maintenance operations, and construction activities. Leads and directs Utilities Technician I (Wastewater) personnel, and/or other assigned personnel, in completing work assignments.

Oversees and inspects maintenance work of contractors on wastewater collection/distribution systems to ensure applicability and compliance with established procedures.

Cleans TV sewer collection systems and storm drains.

Has working knowledge of the Sunshine One Call, state regulations and Utility Standards and construction specification manual.

Oversees, calls, coordinate and when necessary performs “locates” of utilities prior to excavation as required. Also performs surveys on assets of the collection system to update “GIS” mapping.

Maintains availability for “stand by” assignment for a week at a time or other pre-determined schedule, and availability for return to work under the City’s “call back” procedures.

Responds to customer concerns and resolves problems within the City’s sanitary collection system.

Ensures compliance with all local, state, and federal rules and regulations pertaining to the collection, transmission, testing, and disposal of domestic sewage.

Employee will also be required to work evenings, weekends, and holidays on a call out basis. Overtime may be required.

Other Job Functions

Assists the Wastewater Supervisor analyzing operating costs and development of annual budget.

Assists Wastewater Supervisor in training, both professional and safety; motivating; and evaluating division personnel.

Sweeps and cleans work areas and landscape work. Completes forms, writes reports, and delivers messages.

Maintains equipment inventory records and stockroom for repair parts and supplies.

Serves on various committees and attends meetings as required.

Performs other duties as assigned.

Special Requirements
  • Possess a Pollution Control Operators' Association Voluntary “C” Wastewater Collections and two years progressively responsible experience in wastewater operations.
  • Possess a Pollution Control Operators' Association Voluntary “B” Wastewater Collections Technician Certification or obtain within one (1) year of employment.
  • Working knowledge of electronics, electrical systems, hydraulics, pumping systems, and wastewater operations.
  • Ability to effectively interact with citizens/customers.
