Emergency Crisis Mgmt/ Disaster Relief, Maintenance Technician / Mechanic
MICHIGAN INTERNATIONAL SPEEDWAY Nestled on more than 1,400 acres in the Irish Hills of southeastern Michigan, Michigan International Speedway is a track rich in racing history. It has been the heart of NASCAR racing for more than 50 years and is home to the state of Michigan’s largest registered campground, as well as year‑round events such as the MIS Backyard Hockey Tournament, Faster Horses Festival, and Nite Lites.
Responsibilities:- Perform firefighting and track clean‑up/restoration activities, including operating on‑track emergency response equipment, various fire extinguishers, pumps, extrication equipment, laying hose, and diking/damning fluid leaks.
- Provide emergency aid, including administering first aid and other assistance as required.
- Participate in NASCAR on‑line and hands‑on training annually.
- Operate radio and other communications equipment.
- Inspect and maintain fire equipment, apparatus, and facilities; perform minor repairs and report significant issues to the Director of Track Services.
- Maintain the speedway property and equipment, including cleaning and washing walls and floors, caring for grounds, making minor repairs, washing and polishing apparatus, and maintaining the racing surface.
Job Responsibilities:
- Pit Road Firefighter – Provide fire suppression, first aid, and hazardous‑materials mitigation/cleanup in competitor pit stalls.
- Pit Road Supervisor – Supervise Pit Road Firefighters and communicate with sanctioning bodies and security to ensure safety of competitors, teams, and guests.
- Garage Firefighter – Suppress, treat, and clean hazardous materials in the garage area.
- Fuel Island Firefighter – Suppress, treat, and clean hazardous materials at the mobile fuel island.
- On‑Track Firefighter – Suppress fires, stabilize vehicles, perform driver extrication, provide first aid, and mitigate hazardous materials on the race track.
- Clean‑Up Personnel – Remove debris, mitigate spills, assist with wall repairs, conduct track washing and restoration.
- High school diploma or GED equivalent.
- Firefighter certification.
- Minimum 18 years of age at the time of application.
- Valid driver’s license without any suspension or revocation record at hire time.
- No felony convictions or disqualifying criminal history within the past 7 years.
- Ability to read and write English.
- Knowledge of fire suppression and prevention principles, procedures, techniques, and equipment; knowledge of EMS procedures.
- Ability to learn operation of fire suppression and emergency equipment.
- Ability to apply standard firefighting, EMS, hazardous‑materials and fire‑prevention techniques.
- Effective action in emergency and stressful situations.
- Skill in operating listed tools and equipment.
- Follow verbal and written instructions.
- Effective oral and written communication.
- Establish effective working relationships with coworkers, other speedway departments, outside agencies, and guests.
- Perform strenuous or peak physical effort during emergency or training activities for prolonged periods under intense heat or smoke.
- Fire trucks (pickup trucks with firefighting equipment as required).
- Cleanup trucks (pickup trucks with track restoration equipment as required).
