Utility Worker
The Utility Worker is responsible for performing the assigned work schedule following approved custodial job procedures. They correct minor maintenance problems in the building. The Utility Worker performs assigned duties in the care of grounds, including mowing of grass in areas immediately around the building and other areas not accessible to large machinery, removal of snow and ice from walks and steps, and care of flowers and shrubbery.
They maintain buildings and grounds security by opening/closing the building each school day and during special events as directed.

Qualifications:
Must possess or be able to secure a valid chauffeur's license with all endorsements issued by the State of Michigan. Must be able to adapt to conditions which require assignments to more than one service department and/or seasonal work which could vary the shift starting time during the school year. Must be able to follow written and verbal instructions and submit reports as required.
Must be dependable and trustworthy for the handling of valuable and confidential materials. Applicants may be required to take an objective skills test relating to the various activities of this position.
Essential Functions:
Must be willing to improve skills necessary for the routine activities of the position and to develop the skills and knowledge for the position. Must be prepared to learn how to use grass cutting equipment, grass care equipment, snow removal equipment, etc, and must be prepared to work odd hours under adverse weather conditions at the call of the Maintenance and Operations Supervisor and his/her designee Must be willing to work the A.M. shift as necessary, with little notice Shall be responsible to the building principal when assigned to a building, to the department supervisor when assigned to a department and to the Supervisor of Operations at all other times Directly responsible to the working foreman and/or principal in secondary buildings and principal in the elementary buildings when school is in session and to the Supervisor of Operations at all other times Perform the assigned work schedule following approved custodial job procedures Correct minor maintenance problems in the building Perform assigned duties in the care of grounds, including mowing of grass in areas immediately around the building(s) and other areas not accessible to large machinery, removal of snow and ice from walks and steps, and care of flowers and shrubbery.
Maintain neat and clean uniforms when on duty. Project a positive image for the school district with all district employees, whenever the public, guests, or visitors are in the building(s) Maintain proper and neat storage areas for custodial supplies, equipment and tools assigned to the building(s) Maintain buildings and grounds security by opening/closing the building each school day and during special events as directed Assist the principal or building foreman in performing custodial jobs when requested.
Maintain good sanitary conditions of building facilities Make arrangements for use of school facilities by non-school groups as indicated on building use requests Cooperate with all groups, in a pleasant and courteous manner, that use the building after regular school hours Report problems noted in the building to the foreman or principal. Must have knowledge of the operation of mechanical, electrical and heating units in the building(s) Must be familiar with the proper operation and care of custodial mechanical equipment Must have knowledge of institution cleaning procedures Maintain playground equipment in safe and good operating condition.
Work on call as needed at any time for emergency repairs, overtime, or special needs falling outside the normal work hours. Other duties as assigned.
Working Conditions The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those that a custodian encounters while performing essential functions of the job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works indoors and will occasionally work outdoors, including both hot and cold weather.
The employee will be expected to climb and work from ladders and/or personnel lift as necessary. The employee will work near or with moving mechanical equipment. The employee may occasionally work with toxic or caustic chemicals such as petroleum products, degreasers, and sprays. The employee must be able to meet deadlines with severe time constraints. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
