Job DescriptionSUMMARY: Hamilton Community Schools has an opening for a part‑time school‑year custodian at Bentheim Elementary School and invites hardworking, self‑motivated individuals to apply for this position. The custodian provides general custodial/maintenance services for the district and reports to the Custodial Services Supervisor and Building Principal.
LOCATION: Bentheim Elementary School
REPORTS TO: Custodial Services Supervisor
FLSA STATUS: Nonexempt
WORK SCHEDULE: Part‑time school year
AVERAGE WORK WEEK:
- Position #1: (5.5 hours M‑F) 3:30 PM – 9:00 PM during the school year.
- Position #2: (4 hours M‑F) 4:15 PM – 8:15 PM during the school year.
Summers are on a budgeted set of additional hours, which can be accepted in full or turned down entirely. (If accepting additional summer hours, 7:00 AM start time summer)
COLLECTIVE BARGAINING UNIT: Hamilton Custodial/Maintenance Association (HCMA)
PAY SCALE: Per Collective Bargaining Agreement ($17.57/hour base plus an additional $1.50/night premium)
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Sweeps, mops, and scrubs floors and other surfaces.
- Cleans, renovates, and renews floor surface finishes.
- Cleans and dusts furniture, exhibit cases, fixtures, windows, doors, trim, and related furnishings.
- Cleans whiteboards, board rails, and erasers.
- Washes/cleans light fixtures.
- Moves furniture, supplies, and miscellaneous equipment.
- Sweeps or shovels snow from steps, roofs, and walks at building entrances and salts icy steps and walks as necessary.
- Collects, bags, and disposes of trash.
- Locks/unlocks doors and windows to classrooms and offices.
- Turns off unnecessary lighting.
- Cleans and services lavatories, toilet rooms, and locker rooms.
- Washes all interior and exterior glass including framed pictures, partitions, and doors.
- Reports items that require repair.
- Follows written work schedule.
- Coordinates work with the Master Custodian, Custodial Supervisor, and/or principal.
- Assists with the operation of school heating plant and equipment.
- Guards property against fire, theft, and illegal entry; maintain building security.
- Works from ladders or scaffolding.
- Maintains and operates all equipment necessary to perform assigned tasks.
- Does emergency cleaning as needed (e.g., blood, vomit, burst water pipes, etc.).
- Vacuums, spot clean and extracts carpet as necessary.
- Performs all assigned duties in a manner that contributes to the safety and well‑being of the staff and buildings.
OTHER FUNCTIONS:
- Adhere to all policies of the District.
- Must have the ability to establish and maintain effective working relations with co‑workers, supervisor, administrators, and school community members.
- Promptly return phone calls and answer emails.
- Participate in appropriate professional activities/training when necessary.
- Performs all other custodial/maintenance duties assigned by supervisors.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
REQUIRED:
- 18 years of age.
- High school diploma or GED required, college or trade school classes preferred.
- Possess good habits, character, and attendance records.
- Be neat in appearance.
- Detail‑oriented – ability to pay attention to the minute details of a project or task.
- Be able to speak, read and write at a level of proficiency that permits satisfactory job performance.
- Be capable and demonstrate the establishment and maintenance of harmonious effective relationships with staff, supervisors, and co‑workers.
- Possess experience in custodial and maintenance work to carry out the assigned duties preferred.
- Possess a willingness to learn new job skills.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Regularly required to sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms.
- Vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word.
- Frequently required to stand and walk.
- Occasionally required to stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.
- Must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50+ pounds.
- Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
- Subject to inside and outside environmental conditions, noise, and hazards.
