Custodian

Summary of Position:
The Custodian is responsible for maintaining a clean, safe, sanitary, and secure learning environment for students, staff, and visitors. This position performs routine and deep cleaning, light maintenance, event setup and teardown, and assists with maintaining district facilities and grounds. The Custodian is expected to work independently, prioritize assignments, and respond promptly to custodial and facility needs while maintaining the security of assigned buildings.

Job Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Clean and sanitize classrooms, hallways, bathrooms, offices, gyms, cafeterias and any other assigned areas
  • Sweeping, dust mopping, wet mopping, vacuuming, emptying trash, refilling paper products and soap dispensers and sanitizing and wiping high touch surfaces all to be done on a daily basis
  • Shelves, walls, ceilings, furniture, ledges, trophy cases, window sills, etc. are to be in good condition and cleaned as needed
  • Maintain overall cleanliness of assigned areas
  • Clean up bodily fluids, and respond to custodial emergencies
  • Empties trash and recycling containers
  • Performs deep cleaning of buildings during breaks and periods where students and teachers are not present, including the stripping and waxing of floors and a thorough clean of the items in the building
  • Must be able to arm and disarm the buildings alarm system before and after each shift, taking responsibility for the buildings security
  • Must carry and answer cell phone
  • Must check and keep up on emails
  • Pay attention to facility use forms, and take the initiative to set up tables, chairs, bleachers, etc. prior to any and all assemblies and events taking place at the district and then the cleanup and teardown thereafter
  • Light building maintenance, to include changing light bulbs, replacing soap dispensers, unlocking toilet stalls, plunging toilets, moving furniture, stocking paper, etc.
  • Ability to operate various types of power equipment including riding floor cleaning machines
  • Ability to use hand tools
  • Ability to follow instructions and complete assignments
  • Must have excellent time management and communication skills
  • Other duties as assigned, to include but not limited to: cleaning exterior entrance ways, mowing grass, striping ball fields, weed whacking, snow shoveling, salting, pulling exterior trash, helping clean in parts of the school outside your section, etc.

Physical Requirements:

Frequently walk, stand, bend, stoop, kneel, climb, reach, stretch, twist, push, and pull throughout the workday. Ability to climb ladders and work at varying heights. Ability to lift, carry, push, and pull up to 50 pounds on a regular basis. Ability to operate power equipment and custodial machinery safely. Ability to work with a variety of cleaning chemicals while following all safety guidelines.

Ability to work indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions.

Qualifications:

High school diploma or GED preferred. Previous custodial or facilities maintenance experience preferred. Ability to work independently with minimal supervision. Knowledge of proper custodial cleaning methods and equipment. Ability to safely operate custodial machinery and hand tools. Ability to follow written and verbal instructions. Strong organizational, communication, and time management skills. Ability to establish and maintain positive working relationships with students, staff, administrators, and community members.

Certification, Licenses, Registrations:
Must possess an unrestricted Michigan Driver's License. Satisfactorily pass a law enforcement background check including fingerprints. Must pass a personal and professional reference background check. Must receive a satisfactory response to 4205-F Authorization for Release of Information and Employee History Check Under 1996 P.A.189 of 1996; MCL
380.1230b.
