Position: Department Of Transportation Rest Area Attendant (40 Hour)

Position Highlights
  • Full‑time, 40 hours per week
  • Location:

    District 1 – Middletown and Southington, CT
  • A valid driver’s license and a pre‑physical examination are required
  • The candidate pool from this posting may be used to fill future vacancies at other rest area locations
  • Shifts vary; weekend coverage is mandatory
  • Sample shift schedules include evening, afternoon, and early morning shifts with some days off
Responsibilities
  • Grass cutting, trimming, shrub bed maintenance, and hedge row trimming
  • Litter pickup and snow and ice removal
  • Continuous cleaning of rest area grounds and buildings
  • Minor maintenance such as replacing light bulbs, turning off toilets, and conducting minor repairs
  • Report all surface‑water leaks or plumbing malfunctions to the supervisor immediately
  • Prepare daily, weekly, and monthly reports for the facility (water, heating fuel, propane fuel, generator, fire extinguishers)
  • Monitor and report on consumables that require replacement (fuel, etc.) to avoid stockouts
  • Perform seasonal work such as keeping walkways and stairwells free of snow and ice
  • Gather and remove leaves; conduct spring cleanup of debris that falls from trees in winter (branches, leaves, etc.)
  • Assist traveling public, service personnel, and vendors as required
  • Perform related duties as needed
Minimum Qualifications
  • Any experience and training that provides the knowledge, skills, and abilities listed above
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in maintenance trade practices, use of maintenance materials, and application of mechanical principles
  • Experience working with diverse groups in a customer‑service setting
  • Strong communication skills: in person, over the phone, and in writing with various constituents
  • Experience operating maintenance‑related equipment such as snow blowers, push mowers, walk‑behind zero‑turn mowers, and weed whackers
Knowledge, Skill, and Ability
  • Knowledge of the physical properties of standard maintenance materials
  • Understanding of mechanical principles
  • Basic maintenance trade practices
  • Considerable interpersonal skills
  • Oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to use hand and power tools and perform minor repairs to simple mechanical equipment
  • Ability to operate equipment listed on the attached addendum
  • Ability to understand and follow written and oral instructions
Special Requirements
  • Must possess and retain a valid Motor Vehicle Operator’s license and other required licenses
  • Attendant must be able to train and relieve employees on the duties of this class as required
  • Must wear uniform on site at all times during the shift
Physical Requirements

Incumbents must have adequate physical strength, stamina, agility, and visual and auditory acuity, and must maintain such fitness to perform the duties. A physical examination will be required.

Working Conditions

Incumbents are exposed to extreme weather, occasional lifting of heavy weights, frequent lifting of moderate weights, potentially dangerous road and traffic conditions, poison ivy, insect bites, and allergy irritants during summer months, and loud and potentially dangerous machinery.
