POSITION OVERVIEW

Under direction of the Chief Custodian, the Custodian will provide a safe, healthy and clean building, perform minor and preventative maintenance, remove snow and do grounds work, and enforce state rules and district policies. This is a 12‑month position.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Important:
    Night Shift positions start after 1:00pm.
  • Important:
    This position is considered an Essential Employee position.
  • Important:
    Flexibility is vital; hours may change.
  • Perform sweeping, dry/wet mopping, waxing, buffing, vacuuming, cleaning walls, ceilings, windows, furniture, lights, bathrooms, shampooing carpets, moving furniture and supplies, cleaning outside grounds, loading/unloading trucks, shoveling snow and ice, cutting grass, trimming, opening/closing building, securing alarm system.
  • Provide minor maintenance, including replacement of light bulbs, painting, cleaning boilers and heating equipment, and caring for lawn mowers, trimmers, vacuum cleaners and buffers.
  • Drive cars/trucks to pick up equipment, supplies, parts and mail.
  • Other custodial and minor maintenance duties as assigned by authorities.
  • Assume additional responsibilities as directed by the Chief Custodian, Principal or Buildings and Grounds Supervisor.
  • Check and secure building at shift start and end to ensure safety and cleanliness.
  • Clean rooms, hallways, cafeterias, restrooms, offices, stairways, other areas per district standards.
  • Sweep, mop, buff, strip, and wax floors.
  • Clean rugs, carpets, upholstered furniture, and blinds.
  • Wash walls, ceilings, woodwork, windows, doors, and sills.
  • Remove graffiti and clean glass areas.
  • Replace light bulbs.
  • Set up and break down chairs, tables, and equipment in meeting rooms.
  • Clear snow from entrances and walkways, spread sand and ice‑melting chemicals.
  • Perform grounds‑keeping duties, clear debris, maintain grounds.
  • Receive deliveries and assist unloading trucks, storing supplies.
  • Deliver supplies and materials to classrooms, bathrooms, and other building areas.
  • Empty wastebaskets; pick up trash and assist recycling program.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • High School Diploma or GED (preferred).
  • Valid Class D Driver’s License with good driving record.
  • Knowledge of cleaning materials, methods, equipment and procedures.
  • Ability to perform minor maintenance.
  • Ability to follow oral or written directions.
  • Ability to work cooperatively with teachers, students, administrators, co‑workers and the public.
  • Good physical health and strength to lift and clean.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Requires regular speaking, exchanging ideas, accurate and loud instruction, normal cognitive abilities, sustained moderate physical effort, operation of commercial equipment, moving objects weighing 40–50 lb, and continuous standing.

PHYSICAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS

Work involves exposure to materials, equipment and situations requiring safety precautions, protective equipment, and risk management.

  • All hired must submit a criminal background check and a tuberculosis test.
  • Documentation of eligibility for employment and completion of I‑9 and Delaware Child Protection Registry paperwork are required.
