The North Polk Community School District is a progressive educational community located in the Des Moines metro area just north of Ankeny serving the communities of Alleman, Elkhart, Polk City, and Sheldahl. The District proudly serves over 2200 learners from preschool through 12th grade in five buildings (West Elementary, PK thru 2nd;
Big Creek Elementary, 3rd-5th; Central Elementary, PK thru 5th; Middle School, 6th-8th; and High School, 9th-12th).

Hours:
8 hours a day | Compensation: $21.07 per hour.
- Maintain the facility in a condition of excellent cleanliness (sweeping, dusting, mopping/scrubbing, vacuuming, washing windows, cleaning chalkboards, furniture, laundry, waxing floors, and disposing of trash).
- Assume responsibilities for closing the building each school day, ensuring all doors and windows are secured and lights are turned off, and activate/deactivate building security systems.
- Follow district procedures for clean‑up of blood borne pathogens.
- Conduct an ongoing program of general maintenance (replacing ceiling tile, tightening screws in desks, chairs, and door closures, replacing light bulbs, minor plumbing repairs, cleaning filters, and checking motors in unit ventilators).
- Report major repairs promptly to the Director of Buildings and Grounds.
- Check the building heating system at least twice a day to ensure it is working properly when in use.
- Move furniture or equipment as requested for various activities directed by the principal.
- Wash windows on both the inside and outside at least once each year and more frequently if necessary.
- Keep building premises, including sidewalks and play areas, clean at all times.
- Shovel, plow, and/or put ice melt on walks and steps as appropriate.
- Mow and perform landscaping needs around buildings as requested.
- Check for and maintain a safe environment.
- Help unload commodities.
- Participate in professional meetings.
- Follow all district policies, including those relating to a drug‑free school.
- During summer break, perform the work necessary to prepare the building for the next school year.
- Demonstrate organization and professionalism in fulfilling the responsibilities of the job.
- Greet all students, faculty, staff, and visitors courteously.
- Maintain a positive attitude toward school, students, and job and communicate the same to the community.
- Maintain confidentiality in the school operation.
- Adhere to applicable state and federal laws, rules and regulations, board policies, and administrative rules.
- Assume such other duties and responsibilities as may be directed by the Building Principal and Director of Buildings and Grounds.
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Minimum age of 18 years.
- No experience required; experience in general cleaning, chemical handling, and customer service preferred.
- Criminal background check required upon hire.
- Ability to successfully complete a pre‑hire, post‑offer physical examination.
- Basic problem‑solving skills.
- Ability to acquire skills necessary to operate various types of cleaning equipment.
- Ability to prioritize tasks and adapt to changes without notice.
- Ability to promote and follow Board of Education policies, Superintendent policies, and building and department procedures.
- Ability to communicate, interact, and work effectively with people from diverse ethnic and educational backgrounds.
- Ability to recognize the importance of safety in work habits, utilize appropriate safety equipment, and report unsafe conditions to the appropriate administrator.
- Includes extremes of temperature and humidity.
- Hazards include stairs and communicable diseases.
