Position Overview

The City of Wauwatosa is seeking applicants who can perform heavy and semi-skilled labor related to DPW operations to maintain highways, municipal roads, sidewalks, alleys and sewers, parks, forestry, and water operations; operates a variety of tools and heavy equipment. Initially, under close supervision, employees learn to perform assigned activities with detailed instructions on specific procedures to be followed. DPW Maintenance Workers are expected to learn to operate a variety of equipment.
We currently have a first and a third shift opening available. The work hours for first shift are Monday
- Friday 7:00am – 3:00pm. The work hours for third shift are:

Friday 9pm
- Saturday 7am
Saturday 9pm
- Sunday 7am
Sunday 9pm
- Monday 7am
The starting salary for this position is $27.03 - $30.03 per hour depending on experience and qualifications. Third shift employees receive a $1.00/hour alternate shift stipend in addition to a $.25-.30 alternative shift differential pay. Further increases to the top of the range, $34.55, will be based on performance post hire. EssentialFunctions
The following duties are primarily performed and are essential for this position. Employees are expected to be able to perform each of these job duties satisfactorily and successfully to be qualified for the position. Other duties may be required and assigned.
- Operates a wide variety of large municipal vehicles and other heavy construction/maintenance equipment, such as front-end loader, backhoe, street sweepers, automated and rear-loading packers, prentice loader, pavement saw, asphalt roller, sewer cleaners including vacuum equipment, articulated tractors and CDL snow plowing and anti-icing equipment.
- Perform public works functions such as full depth concrete street repairs including excavation, form setting, pouring and finishing; sidewalk, driveway and curb repairs; full depth asphalt repairs; pothole and skin patching; street sweeping; sanitary and storm sewer cleaning; refuse collection, structure inspection and rebuilding and fence repairs.
- Perform heavy manual labor or semi-skilled labor outdoors regardless of weather.
- Report for overtime work as assigned during public works emergencies.
- Perform salting, plowing, snow removal, pumping, or storm debris collection outside of the normal work hours.
- Maintain parks facilities: buildings, grounds and athletic fields
- Performs maintenance and janitorial work at parks and city facilities.
- Other public works duties as assigned.
Education and Experience Requirements :
- High School Diploma or equivalent required.
- Two years' experience in the performance of heavy manual or semi-skilled tasks and operation of heavy or medium duty trucks preferred.
- Prior experience in trade work (such as carpentry, plumbing, electrical, HVAC, roofing custodial work, building maintenance, or masonry) strongly preferred.
Licenses, Certifications, and Other Requirements:
- A valid Wisconsin driver's license.
- Class B CDL must be obtained within one year of employment. That time frame may be extended depending on the availability of internal training resources.
- Wisconsin Class B CDL preferred at time of hire.
