This is an AM shift—typical start times include 5:00 AM to 1:30 PM or 5:30 AM to 2:00 PM or 6:00 AM to 2:30 PM. Please note that Plant Operations schedules its interviews; ask the hiring manager about locations and start/end times.

Summary

Under general supervision, provides maintenance and upkeep for the inside and outside of MPS buildings.

Responsibilities
  • Provide maintenance and upkeep for the inside and outside of MPS buildings within scope of authority and training; duties may vary by assignment.
  • Oversee Custodians, coordinate assignments and schedules, and monitor work methods; inspect buildings and grounds to verify work quality and resource use.
  • Work on assigned projects; may maintain swimming pools and other special recreational facilities.
  • Order supplies, create work orders, track budget and expenditures; review and process timesheets; maintain operational logs; prepare operational reports.
  • Clean buildings (vacuuming, sweeping, mopping, washing, refinishing); sanitize bathrooms; restock supplies; remove trash; replace burned-out lights; report electrical/mechanical failures; clean and adjust furniture.
  • Clean and maintain grounds (seasonal lawn care and snow removal).
  • Control work site safety, ensure compliance with safety rules, and keep equipment in safe operating condition.
  • Perform minor repairs or initiate work orders.
  • Use proper safety precautions; clean spills and address unsafe conditions promptly per procedures.
  • Follow manufacturer instructions for chemical use and dilution.
  • Identify and report unsafe acts, conditions, accidents, and injuries; report security issues; assist with office duties as needed.
  • Provide customer service, respond to requests, and assist co-workers and visitors.
  • Open/close facilities, set security systems, respond to emergencies (including callbacks for break-ins and mechanical problems); assist with safety drills and annual cleaning duties.
  • Demonstrate courteous, cooperative behavior with students, clients, visitors, and MPS staff; promote a harmonious and effective workplace.
  • Support the Superintendent’s goals and comply with policies and procedures.
  • Maintain confidentiality of work-related issues, records, and MPS information.
  • Other duties as assigned; may work outside normal hours to meet position requirements.
Minimum Qualifications

Education, Training, and

Experience:

High School Diploma or GED; AND two (2) years of experience as an MPS Custodian; OR an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience as determined by Human Resources.

Medical Examination:
Employment is contingent upon the results of a physical examination by the designated physician.

Knowledge Of
  • Materials and equipment used in building and grounds maintenance.
  • Techniques and procedures for cleaning and maintenance of public buildings.
  • Federal and state safety rules and regulations.
  • Occupational hazards and safety precautions.
  • Techniques for use and storage of chemicals, including OSHA MSDS for hazardous chemicals.
Skills
  • Coordinating staff and delegating tasks and authority.
  • Promoting and enforcing safe work practices.
  • Operating and maintaining tools and equipment safely.
