Custodian, Citywide - (SY 2026 - 2027)

Salary Range: $21.19 - $22.56 per hour.

Under general supervision, assists with cleaning and maintenance for inside and outside of Minneapolis Public Schools buildings.

• Maintain building interior by washing, dusting, cleaning mirrors and fixtures; washing windows, counters and walls; sweeping, vacuuming, scrubbing and waxing floors; cleaning and supplying lavatories; replacing light bulbs.
• Maintain building exterior by removing litter, mowing, maintaining shrubbery, edging and trimming lawns; removing snow and ice from walkways and steps.
• Assist in lifting and moving furniture and setting up classroom furnishings.
• Utilize proper safety precautions and clean up spills promptly.
• Follow manufacturer’s directions for use and dilution of cleaning chemicals.
• Recognize, avoid, and report unsafe acts and conditions, security issues, and illegal activities.
• Provide customer service as needed, respond to requests, and assist co-workers, students and visitors.
• Attend seminars and training sessions as provided by management.
• Open and close facilities, set security systems, respond to emergency situations, assist with safety drills and annual cleaning duties.

Education, Training, and Experience Guidelines: High School Diploma or GED equivalent; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.

Employment is contingent upon the results of a physical examination performed by an examining physician.

Knowledge of:

• Materials and equipment used in building and grounds maintenance.
• Basic techniques and procedures used in cleaning and maintenance of public buildings.
• Federal and state safety rules and regulations.
• Occupational hazards and safety precautions.
• Techniques for use and storage of chemicals, including OSHA Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS).

Skill in:

• Operating and maintaining tools and equipment in a safe and effective manner.
• Following and maintaining safety standards.
• Following verbal and written instructions.

License and Certification Requirements: A valid Minnesota State Driver’s License may be required.

Work is performed indoors and outdoors at MPS facilities; requires constant physical effort; may expose to safety hazards and dangerous tools and equipment; requires walking, bending, reaching, kneeling, crouching, climbing ladders, and ability to lift up to 60 pounds.

Final appointment to this position will be contingent upon passing a criminal background check.
