Facilities & Grounds Caretaker
The Facilities & Grounds Caretaker is responsible for maintaining the appearance, cleanliness, safety, and functionality of Eureka Recycling's buildings and grounds. This position ensures our facilities are welcoming, well-maintained, and operating smoothly through preventative maintenance, grounds care, custodial work, and basic building repairs.
This role focuses on facility and property maintenance, not vehicle, heavy equipment, or production machinery maintenance, and works closely with the Safety Committee and operations teams to identify and address facility needs.
Responsibilities include:
- Custodial duties including cleaning of common areas, restrooms, break rooms, offices, and other shared spaces within the site's facilities.
- Performing sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, dusting, and sanitizing of floors, surfaces, and high-touch areas.
- Restocking restroom and other break room related supplies.
- Collecting and disposing of trash, recycling, and compost throughout the facility.
- Responding promptly to spills, leaks, accidents, and other unexpected cleaning situations to maintain a safe and professional workplace.
- Cleaning windows, glass doors, mirrors, and other interior glass surfaces as needed.
- Mowing, trimming, and maintaining lawns and green spaces.
- Caring for gardens, trees, and landscaped areas.
- Removing litter from parking lots, sidewalks, and outdoor spaces, especially after adverse weather events.
- Coordinating seasonal landscaping projects and improvements.
- Coordinating or performing snow removal and ice management for walkways and entrances.
- Preparing grounds for changing seasons.
- Performing routine inspections and facility walkthroughs to identify maintenance needs and developing and maintaining preventive maintenance schedules.
- Responding to roof leaks, plumbing leaks, fluid spills, and other facility maintenance issues.
- Completing light carpentry, drywall, painting, patching, and cosmetic repairs.
- Repairing doors, locks, windows, shelving, fixtures, furniture, and building hardware.
- Replacing ceiling and carpet tiles, filters, light bulbs, and signage.
- Replacing HVAC filters and performing other basic building maintenance tasks.
- Identifying and correcting facility hazards.
- Ensuring walkways, exits, and work areas remain safe and accessible.
- Assisting with facility emergency preparedness activities, including maintaining spill response supplies and emergency equipment.
- Supporting OSHA and workplace safety initiatives through membership on Eureka's Safety Committee.
- Coordinating with outside vendors for specialized repairs and services.
- Verifying work completion, communicating facility issues to leadership, and obtaining quotes for maintenance projects and facility improvements as requested.
- Assisting in coordinating inspections and preventative maintenance performed by outside contractors.
- Maintaining organized maintenance storage areas and inventory of maintenance supplies, tools, and facility equipment.
- Ordering supplies as needed.
- Setting up and tearing down tables, chairs, and equipment for meetings and organizational events.
- Installing seasonal decorations or signage.
- Assisting with recycling and waste diversion infrastructure around the property.
- Helping maintain warehouse organization in designated facility storage areas.
- Performing other duties as assigned.
Skills and abilities
include:
- General knowledge of building systems and basic repair techniques.
- Experience in facilities and building maintenance, custodial work, groundskeeping, or related fields.
- Ability to safely operate lawn care, maintenance equipment, and use of hand and power tools.
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to work independently, prioritize multiple maintenance/custodial requests, and maintain attention to detail.
- Valid driver's license.
- Bilingual (English/Spanish) is a plus.
Physical requirements include:
- Ability to lift up to 35 pounds frequently and up to 50 pounds occasionally, including lifting and moving materials with a shovel.
- Ability to bend, stoop, kneel, squat, crouch, twist, and reach overhead while performing maintenance/custodial duties.
- Ability to push, pull, and maneuver cleaning equipment, carts, and containers.
- Ability to walk up and down stairs/ladders several times per day.
- Ability to stand and walk continuously for up to 8-hour shifts.
Working conditions include:
- Work is performed in a variety of environments, including office, warehouse, manufacturing, and maintenance shop settings.
- Subject to noise from equipment operation. Hearing protection required.
- Works indoors and outdoors; subject to seasonal and adverse weather conditions.
- Work may require occasional weekend and/or evening work.
