Location: Babbitt

The salary for this position has a starting range between $38,000 - $51,000. We take into consideration an individual’s background and experience in determining salary; therefore, base pay offered may vary considerably depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. The compensation package includes a wide range of other benefits and earned time off that vary depending on part‑time or full‑time status.

Job Summary

The Camp Caretaker is responsible for overseeing the maintenance, cleanliness and upkeep of the buildings, equipment and property. The incumbent interacts positively with campers and staff and responds to requests personally or assigns to the appropriate maintenance staff member. The incumbent assists performing jobs for camp community as needed. This position reports to the Property Manager.

Essential Functions
  • In coordination with the Property Manager, ensure the safety and usefulness of camp facilities. This may include but is not limited to the maintenance of:
  • Custodial and maintenance functions such as wet and dust mopping, dusting, trash removal, recycling, window washing, meeting set up, vacuuming, and general cleaning as requested or needed.
  • All owned and rented vehicles and watercraft.
  • Duties listed on the daily schedule
  • Daily upkeep of assigned area and equipment.
  • General building maintenance duties such as carpentry projects, painting, changing filters and light bulbs, clearing plumbing clogs, repairing leaking faucets.
  • Grounds maintenance duties such as snow removal, mowing, clearing trees and brush.
  • Work with the Property Manager to contribute to annual and long‑term plans, priorities and budgets for facility operation and maintenance.
  • Supervise part‑time and seasonal facilities staff.
  • Assist in identifying potential contractors, securing bids, and managing projects.
  • Respond to after hours or weather‑related emergencies as needed.
  • Organize and manage volunteer involvement in facility projects which enhance overall goals.
  • Timely submission of expenses.
  • Take initiative to identify and complete repairs, maintenance, and improvements for the overall camp facility.
Relationships

This position reports to the Property Manager who reports to the Executive Director.

Qualifications Required
  • Minimum age of 18.
  • Strong facility maintenance skills.
  • Ability to read and interpret instructions, procedures, manuals, and other documents.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Knowledge of cleaning methods and equipment.
  • Understanding of the upkeep and care of the equipment and chemicals used for cleaning and general maintenance.
  • Ability to operate camp maintenance equipment independently.
  • Ability to utilize provided technology and software to perform duties and manage communication.
Preferred
  • Experience working with contractors, vendors, and suppliers.
  • Ability to become DQF (formerly DOT) certified driver.
Work Conditions
  • If applicable, willing to live on‑site at the camp in provided housing.
  • Ability to work flexible hours and be on call.
  • Ability to walk and move heavy loads over rough, uneven terrain.
  • Move up to 50 pounds of project materials and/or tools to remote building locations up to 200 feet away.
  • Ability to work outdoors in all four seasons.
  • Erect and stand on scaffolding, ladders, and platforms.
  • Work at heights up to 30 feet for extended periods of time.
  • Work with paint, cleaning equipment, chemical compounds, solvents, cleaners, and solutions in dry, liquid, powder, spray, and aerosol forms.
  • Ability to paint, clean equipment, and operate motorized equipment as needed.
  • Work in conditions that will create dirt and dust.
  • Perform essential maintenance to facility or equipment which may involve, but not limited to the following activities: semi‑reach to full‑reach overhead; crouching; kneeling; shoveling; working in narrow and/or confining spaces: underground, overhead, and at ground level; twisting of the waist, shoulders, and legs; and lying on stomach and/or back.
  • Ability to report and record maintenance requests.
  • Depending on camp locations, may need to be comfortable operating motorized watercraft.

Supervisory titles may change depending on camp.
