The Custodian is a general district custodian assigned to a building by the Director of Buildings and Grounds and will be responsible for maintaining a safe and sanitary school environment. The role involves cleaning assigned areas, maintaining and repairing building components, and performing additional duties as assigned by the Director.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities- Vacuum and shampoo carpets and rugs.
- Sweep and vacuum floors.
- Mop all floors, hallways, and entryways as assigned.
- Follow all district cleaning maps and procedures for the building.
- Fill in at other buildings when needed.
- Clean all bathrooms and locker rooms.
- Repair and wash lockers.
- Change light bulbs and dust and clean light fixtures.
- Strip and wax floors.
- Operate floor scrub machines.
- Secure all doors and windows before leaving.
- Move boxes, desks, furniture, and shelving in and out of rooms.
- Load and unload inventory into storage rooms.
- Check equipment and classrooms daily and report damage to the custodian technician and/or the Director of Buildings and Grounds.
- Work with students and summer‑time workers on building cleaning and repairs.
- Remove all garbage, clean and sanitize garbage cans.
- Assist with sidewalk cleaning, sanding, salting, and general grounds maintenance.
- Perform cleaning services inside and around the building as needed.
- Set up and take down furniture and equipment for education programs held in the building.
- Assist food services in cleaning when needed.
- Prepare and maintain winter equipment (snow blowers, plows, salt spreaders, shovels) for snow removal operations.
- Inspect equipment regularly and complete a daily log book.
- Track and record maintenance, repairs, and inventory needs.
- Notify the Custodian Technician and/or the Director of Buildings and Grounds of needed parts and supplies.
- Assist with operating snow removal equipment when necessary.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and secure equipment storage area.
- Ensure compliance with safety procedures and environmental regulations.
- Recommend equipment replacement and upgrades as needed.
- Work collaboratively with maintenance and custodial teams.
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Valid driver’s license.
- Knowledge of cleaning supplies and products.
- Previous experience as a school district custodian.
- Work performed indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions.
- Physical activity includes lifting up to 50 pounds and pushing, pulling, or dragging up to 75 pounds.
- Work hours may vary seasonally, including early mornings or emergency call‑ins for snow removal or weekend event cleaning.
- Normal hours are approximately 3:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. (Afternoon Shift, 0.25 cents per hour).
- Citizenship, residency or work visa required.
