Day Custodian/Engineer (CHHS)

Position is a 1.0 FTE (benefit eligible). External posting period 6/23/2026 - until filled. Interested applicants should apply online heights.k12.mn.us. Qualification Requirements

  • Sweeps, strips, buffs, waxes, or dust mops assigned areas, cleans carpets.
  • Empties trash receptacles, removes trash from buildings.
  • Dusts furniture, walls, windowsills, and other woodwork; cleans windows.
  • Sanitizes and cleans drinking fountains and other high use surfaces.
  • Cleans spills and sanitizes areas.
  • Cleans lockers, walls, and other areas; removes graffiti.
  • Changes light bulbs and ballasts.
  • Opens and secures building.
  • Performs systematic cleaning of facilities.
  • Sets up and removes bleachers, chairs, desks, or other equipment for various functions and/or events.
  • Monitors smoke and fire alarm and heating and cooling systems.
  • Performs general maintenance and repairs as needed.
  • Performs boiler room preventative maintenance and chemical balancing.
  • Performs light carpentry and painting.
  • Performs minor plumbing repairs.
  • Fills in for lead when the lead is absent.
  • Attends work regularly and arrives on time.
Knowledge,

Skills and Abilities

General knowledge of cleaning methods, materials and equipment; general knowledge of material safety data sheets; some knowledge of heating and cooling systems; skill reading assembly diagrams and material safety data sheets; ability to understand and follow simple oral and written directions; ability to read and understand basic English direction; ability to work in a fairly independent environment with little or no supervision;

ability to work with a varied group of people coming from different backgrounds; ability to be thorough and clean when working; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates, students and other community members.

Education and Experience

High school diploma or GED, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Physical Requirements

This work requires the regular exertion of up to 10 pounds of force and frequent exertion of up to 50 pounds of force; work regularly requires standing, walking, using hands to finger, handle or feel, reaching with hands and arms and pushing or pulling, frequently requires speaking or hearing, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling, lifting and repetitive motions and occasionally requires sitting and climbing or balancing;

work requires close vision and color perception; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word and conveying detailed or important instructions to others accurately, loudly or quickly; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels and to receive detailed information through oral communications and/or to make fine distinctions in sound;

work requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data, visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, using of measuring devices, assembly or fabrication of parts within arms length, operating machines, operating motor vehicles or equipment and observing general surroundings and activities; work regularly requires working near moving mechanical parts, exposure to outdoor weather conditions and exposure to the risk of electrical shock, frequently requires exposure to wet, humid conditions (non-weather), exposure to fumes or airborne particles and exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals and occasionally requires working in high, precarious places, exposure to extreme cold (non-weather), exposure to extreme heat (non-weather), exposure to vibration and exposure to blood borne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment;

work is generally in a moderately noisy location (e.g. business office, light traffic).

Special Requirements

First Class Boilers License within three months. CPO License within three months. Experience working in a multi-cultural setting with diverse groups of people preferred. Alternatives to the qualifications as the Superintendent may find appropriate and acceptable will also be considered. Valid driver's license in the State of Minnesota.
