Job Description

Position Title: Full-Time Custodian

Department: Buildings and Grounds

Reports To: Head Custodian and/or Facilities Director (or Superintendent, as assigned)

Full-Time, 12-Month Position

Position Summary

The Full-Time Custodian is responsible for providing a clean, safe, sanitary, and well-maintained learning environment for students, staff, and visitors. This position performs routine cleaning, preventative maintenance, event setup, grounds maintenance, and building security while promoting a positive image of Menahga Public Schools. The custodian works collaboratively with administration, teachers, staff, and community members to support the educational mission of the district.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities Building Cleaning & Sanitation
  • Clean classrooms, offices, hallways, restrooms, locker rooms, cafeterias, and common areas daily.
  • Sweep, dust mop, wet mop, vacuum, and shampoo floors as scheduled.
  • Strip, wax, buff, and refinish floors.
  • Clean carpets using extraction equipment.
  • Dust furniture, windowsills, vents, and fixtures.
  • Clean interior and exterior glass.
  • Empty trash and recycling containers.
  • Replace liners and dispose of waste properly.
  • Restock restroom supplies including soap, paper towels, and toilet tissue.
  • Clean and sanitize restrooms throughout the day.
  • Clean drinking fountains and bottle fillers.
  • Remove graffiti when necessary.
  • Sanitize high-touch surfaces to reduce the spread of illness.
Building Maintenance
  • Perform routine building inspections.
  • Replace light bulbs and ceiling tiles.
  • Complete minor repairs such as:
    • Door hardware
    • Locks
    • Furniture
    • Shelving
    • Plumbing fixtures
    • Classroom equipment
  • Report maintenance issues requiring skilled trades.
  • Monitor heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems for proper operation.
  • Maintain custodial equipment in proper working condition.
Safety & Security
  • Lock and unlock buildings according to schedules.
  • Conduct security checks before leaving buildings.
  • Monitor fire exits and emergency equipment.
  • Respond appropriately during emergencies.
  • Follow all OSHA, EPA, Minnesota Department of Education, and district safety regulations.
  • Properly store and handle cleaning chemicals according to Safety Data Sheets (SDS).
  • Participate in emergency preparedness and crisis response procedures.
Event & Activity Support
  • Set up and tear down tables, chairs, stages, bleachers, and equipment for:
    • Athletic events
    • Concerts
    • School board meetings
    • Community education
    • Graduation
    • School activities
  • Assist with weekend and evening events as assigned.
  • Clean facilities following events.
Grounds Maintenance

Assist with seasonal grounds maintenance including:

  • Snow removal
  • Ice control
  • Sidewalk maintenance
  • Lawn mowing
  • Weed trimming
  • Playground inspections
  • Exterior litter pickup
  • Maintaining entrances and sidewalks in safe condition
Equipment Operation

Operate and maintain equipment including:

  • Auto scrubbers
  • Burnishers
  • Pressure washers
  • Snow blowers
  • Utility carts
  • Hand and power tools
Inventory & Supply Management
  • Monitor custodial supply inventory.
  • Notify supervisor when supplies require replenishment.
  • Receive and organize deliveries.
  • Properly store chemicals and supplies.
  • Help maintain equipment maintenance records.
Customer Service
  • Provide courteous service to students, staff, parents, and community members.
  • Respond promptly to custodial requests.
  • Work cooperatively with building staff.
  • Maintain confidentiality regarding students and district operations.
Other Duties
  • Assist other custodians when needed.
  • Participate in district safety training.
  • Attend required meetings and professional development.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Head Custodian, Facilities Director, or Superintendent.
Required Qualifications
  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Valid Minnesota driver's license preferred.
  • Ability to successfully pass a criminal background check.
  • Ability to obtain required certifications or training as assigned.
  • Previous custodial or facilities maintenance experience preferred.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

The successful candidate will demonstrate the ability to:
