Summary
Operates one or more types of small, heavy duty motorized, and automotive equipment and a variety of hand tools, power tools and equipment in the construction, maintenance and repair of the City’s public works infrastructure.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities- Operates a variety of automotive, small equipment, and heavy‑duty equipment which may include the following: backhoe, mini excavator, paving equipment, skid steer, dump truck, knuckle boom loader, shuttle truck, sweeper, and other similar equipment.
- Operates a variety of hand tools to include shovels, rakes, pick axes and other similar types of equipment requiring manual operation.
- Inspects, services, and performs minor repairs on equipment as needed.
- Assists in loading and unloading materials and equipment and cleans up work areas.
- Participates in all other operations as necessary.
- Completes all necessary and required forms, worksheets, and reports in a timely and correct manner that will account for time, materials used, work performed, and other necessary information so that a complete record will be available.
- Performs other duties as required.
- Demonstrated proficiency in the operation of required equipment.
- Exercise initiative, resourcefulness, and experienced judgment in interpreting and applying guidelines as well as developing and recommending solutions to problems that are unique and outside the scope of current written guidelines.
- Ability to meet deadlines.
- Exercise a high degree of independent thought and action.
- Minimum of two (2) years of experience operating required heavy equipment.
- Non‑US citizens must possess all appropriate documentation.

Education And/Or ExperienceHigh school diploma or acceptable equivalent degree is required.
Language Skills- Ability to understand and follow oral and/or written instructions.
- Ability to communicate in a clear and concise manner to the general public/citizens.
- Ability to write routine reports, logs and daily paperwork.
- The ability to apply basic logic or reasoning in routine and non‑routine functions of operation, maintenance and construction work.
- The ability to implement and understand work hazards and applicable safety measures needed for the job.
- Ability to exercise initiative, resourcefulness, and experienced judgment in interpreting and applying guidelines as well as developing and recommending solutions to prove.
- Ability to identify and evaluate machine functions.
- Ability to deal with nonverbal symbols.
- Ability to deal with abstract and concrete concepts.
- Maintain a valid commercial license from the State of Mississippi.
- Class "B" CDL is required.
- While performing the duties of this job, the work may involve lifting, pulling, pushing, positioning or exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally (6‑33% of the work day); and lifting, pulling, pushing, positioning or exerting up to 50 pounds of force frequently (34‑66% of the work day).
- The work may involve overhead work occasionally.
- The work may involve standing, walking and bending at the waist frequently; and sitting, squatting, kneeling, crawling and climbing ladders or stairs occasionally.
- The work may involve use of the hands for simple grasping, pushing, pulling and fine manipulation of objects, tools (including power tools), controls and equipment frequently, and repetitively occasionally.
- Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.
- The employee is regularly required to talk and hear.
