Position Overview
This role is a general laborer responsible for working at a facility that loads and unloads barges and trucks. Responsibilities vary daily and may include cleaning, maintenance, and repair of barges.
Responsibilities- Fully participate in the company Safety Program and attend daily pre‑shift meetings.
- Perform all duties in compliance with OSHA, company safety, and environmental regulations, including wearing appropriate PPE.
- Execute deckhand duties such as reading drafts, opening/closing lids, and tying off barges.
- Perform barge loading duties, loading barges to meet draft and quality requirements and oversee other deckhand(s).
- Transfer, load, and move grain to appropriate locations as needed.
- Maintain grain quality during storage and transfer.
- Complete documentation accurately, promptly, and legibly.
- Perform general clean‑up: sweeping, shoveling, washing, painting, and other housekeeping tasks.
- Execute preventive maintenance and/or repairs as applicable.
- Handle additional duties such as unloading barges, cleaning barges, moving product to storage, loading trucks with heavy equipment, loading rail, loading products to specifications, operating dryers, and operating other heavy equipment.
- Other duties as assigned.
Required:
High school diploma or equivalent, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Required – None.
Preferred – 1 year’s experience working in an industrial environment with a dependable work record.
- Basic mathematical skills (add, subtract, multiply, divide).
- Effective interpersonal, oral and written communication skills and the ability to interact with all levels of people within and outside the organization.
- Ability to complete documentation requirements.
- Ability to follow directions and use logical thought to interpret instructions and troubleshoot problems.
- Ability to work well independently and within a team.
- Ability to use appropriate tools for assigned tasks.
- Ability to remain focused on exceptional customer service, both internally and externally.
- Ability to balance constantly/continuously.
- Ability to bend, stoop, twist, crouch, crawl, kneel, and squat frequently.
- Ability to climb stairs and ladders and work at significant heights.
- Ability to remain concentrated on tasks without distraction.
- Ability to distinguish grain grades, colors, odors, and damage characteristics.
- Ability to use the nose to recognize particular odors with accuracy.
- Ability to enter information into a computer.
- Ability to grasp and reach frequently.
- Ability to lift, push, and pull 50 lbs. occasionally to continuously depending on daily needs.
- Ability to use applicable PPE.
- Ability to pass required PFT and fit testing.
- Ability to pass all required FRA and DOT testing, where applicable.
- Ability to work in confined spaces.
- Ability to walk safely on barge surfaces and around water.
- Ability to stand and walk constantly/continuously.
- Ability to communicate verbally, in person, and over two‑way radio, and recognize emergency alarms.
- Ability to understand and follow written instructions.
- Ability to walk safely on top of railcars, open gates, and operate vibrators, where applicable.
- Ability to work extended hours, weekends, holidays, and alternate shifts as needed.
- Ability to work in high dust environments around grain and other bulk products, where applicable.
- Ability to work outside in extreme weather conditions.
- Acute awareness of surroundings and quick adjustment to changing signals.
Required to work rotating 12‑hour shifts, including evenings, nights, weekends, holidays, and extended hours (Convent, LA location only).
Environmental ConditionsThe work environment includes both indoor and outdoor conditions such as heat, cold, wet, humid, and dry arid environments. Frequent use of personal protective equipment is required.
Travel5%–20% travel may be required at some facilities, including off‑site training and work at alternate locations.
CompensationExpected base pay range: $13.00–$13.00 per hour. Actual pay may vary based on location, experience, and qualifications.
