General Function

The Groundskeeper‑General Maintenance Worker performs semi‑skilled work in the maintenance, care, and modification of university grounds and landscapes, operating electrically‑powered and gasoline‑powered groundskeeping equipment and machines, using hand and power tools, and performing maintenance on equipment, minor repairs, painting, carpentry, plumbing, electrical repairs, custodial services, and related duties.

Description of Primary Duties
  • Seeding, watering, mulching, fertilizing, and applying chemicals to outside plantings, lawns, and turf; inspecting plant materials for insects and disease; transplanting, pruning, trimming, and cultivating trees, shrubs, ground cover, and flowers.
  • Conducting regular grounds and landscape maintenance by mowing lawns, trimming and edging, weeding, thinning, cleaning flower beds, and setting up, adjusting, repairing, and cleaning irrigation systems.
  • Keeping daily logs of watering and chemical spraying, recording areas, amounts, types of chemicals, and environmental conditions.
  • Installing, removing, repairing, and maintaining landscape lighting, parking meters, signs, cables, chains, barricades, gates, bicycle racks, feeders, posts, fences, rock walls, streets, parking lots, athletic fields, tennis courts, track, and omni‑turf.
  • Removing unsightly trash and debris from public areas, raking, sweeping, bagging, and transporting trash to designated collection points.
  • Cleaning and disinfecting trash and cigarette receptacles regularly, repairing and installing receptacles as needed.
  • Assisting in preventing accidents from snow or ice by operating snow removal equipment, shoveling, and spreading sand, clay, and salt.
  • Preparing outdoor locations for visitors and vendors, painting and marking athletic fields, moving bleachers and seating, and erecting portable goals or other equipment.
  • Applying chemical compounds safely with protective clothing, masks, gloves, and boots, following written or verbal directions for mixing, application, and disposal.
  • Operating light vehicles such as pick‑up trucks, tractors, street sweepers, riding mowers, and portable power tools while observing traffic laws and safety protocols.
  • Performing routine preventive maintenance and cleaning on equipment and machines within reasonable capabilities.
  • Replacing and disposing of light bulbs in interior building settings using ladders, lifts, or other tools.
  • Painting walls, woodwork, furniture, and equipment, including patching, finishing, and maintenance.
  • Delivering supplies and equipment, loading and safeguarding items, delivering to correct department, and obtaining signatures for receipt.
  • Assisting with management of surplus property items by retrieving, recording transfers, and returning to the university warehouse or Springfield warehouse.
  • Performing custodial services in buildings, classrooms, offices, lavatories, and restrooms following established procedures and guidelines.
  • Carrying out minor maintenance using hand and power tools—carpentry repairs, replacing floor boards, performing minor plumbing repairs, and replacing defective electrical switches, light bulbs, fuses, and fluorescent ballasts.
  • Contributing to overall campus success by performing all other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Acceptable Qualifications

Education: High school diploma or equivalent is required.

Experience: At least two years of groundskeeping experience, demonstrating knowledge of planting, cultivating, and trimming trees, shrubs, ground cover, flowers, and grasses. Equivalent combinations of education and experience may substitute. Knowledge of chemical use and disposal is preferred.
