Job Summary
General laborer position responsible for loading and unloading barges and trucks at a grain terminal. Duties include deckhand tasks, barge loading, grain transfer, maintenance, safety compliance, and general housekeeping.
Responsibilities- Participate in the company Safety Program and attend daily pre‑shift meetings.
- Perform all duties in compliance with OSHA, company safety, and environmental regulations while wearing appropriate PPE.
- Handle deckhand duties: read drafts, open/close lids, tie off barges, etc.
- Load barges to meet draft and quality requirements and oversee deckhand(s).
- Transfer, load, and move grain to appropriate locations, ensuring grain quality during storage and transfer.
- Document work promptly, accurately, and legibly.
- Maintain general cleanup: sweeping, shoveling, washing, painting, housekeeping.
- Perform preventative maintenance or repairs as applicable.
- Unload barges, clean barges, move product to storage, load trucks using heavy equipment, load rail, run and shut down dryers, operate heavy equipment where required.
- Follow other duties as assigned.
- High school diploma or equivalent, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- No experience required; preferred 1 year’s experience in an industrial environment.
- Basic mathematical skills (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division).
- Effective interpersonal, oral and written communication skills.
- Ability to complete documentation requirements.
- Ability to follow directions, use logical thought, interpret oral and written instructions, and troubleshoot problems.
- Ability to work independently and within a team.
- Ability to use appropriate tools for assigned tasks.
- Ability to remain focused on customer service.
Work requires continuous balance, bending, stooping, twisting, crouching, crawling, kneeling, and squatting. Ability to climb stairs, ladders, and work ting, pushing, and pulling up to 50lb. May involve confined spaces, working around water, on barges or railcars, and in extreme weather. Must work rotating 12‑hour shifts, including evenings, nights, weekends, holidays, and alternate shifts. Travel may be required up to 20% of the time.
CompensationBase pay range: $16.00 – $16.00 per hour.
