Job Summary
The University of South Alabama Grounds department is hiring a Heavy Equipment Operator I. The role involves operating a variety of heavy equipment for campus maintenance and construction projects.
Minimum QualificationsHigh school diploma or equivalent, one year of experience operating heavy equipment in construction and maintenance fields, possession of a valid driver’s license, and a driving record sufficient to maintain insurance coverage under the University of South Alabama. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
Preferred QualificationsExperience with a diverse range of heavy equipment such as loaders, backhoes, skid steers, mowers, and dump trucks. Familiarity with preventative maintenance for heavy equipment.
Essential Functions- Operate solid waste collection trucks and other vehicles throughout campus and off‑campus areas following safety procedures.
- Load and unload bagged trash and solid waste from assigned pick‑up points to trucks and at designated transfer stations.
- Perform preventative maintenance on assigned vehicles and equipment, checking levels of cargo, fluid, brakes, tires, and cleaning internal and external components.
- Operate a loader, backhoe, skid steer, mowers, lift, light‑duty dump truck, and excavator to dig ditches, build berms and swales, and load sand, soil, gravel, and rocks onto trucks.
- Perform tree felling and brush clearing using chainsaws, hydraulic tree spades, and high‑speed chipper/grinders.
- Assist with construction projects, including concrete walkways, retaining walls, and drainage systems, and assist with grounds maintenance as needed.
- Travel to various work sites using a University vehicle.
- Move equipment and supplies weighing up to 100 pounds with assistance.
- Maintain regular and prompt attendance.
- Work schedule as defined and overtime as required.
- Perform related duties as required.
