Maintenance Technician / Mechanic
DUTIES / RESPONSIBILITIES
This position is an entry level in the test technician & activation job family. Under close supervision, performs routine test technician duties in the support of higher level Test Specialists.
- Works from schematics, diagrams, written and verbal descriptions, layouts or defined plans to perform routine testing, checkout, and trouble‑shooting functions of a simple nature.
- Performs routine operational test and fault isolation on systems and equipment to ensure conformance with final product specifications.
- Utilizes routine manufacturing test or diagnostic equipment specific to the product.
- May perform limited design activities in support of test equipment/procedures development.
- Assigned to activities such as production, test, system checkouts, quality control.
- Conducts defined tests and collects data as assigned.
- Diagnoses and isolates malfunctions down to the component level.
Preferred experience and/or training:
- Testing experience in a shipyard, marine, aerospace, industrial/commercial, or offshore oil and gas environment.
- Two (2) years technical trade or military technical school.
- Prior Navy, Coast Guard, or Merchant Mariner experience.
- Basic understanding of ship construction drawings and testing procedures.
- Basic knowledge of how marine equipment should operate.
- Basic Mechanical and/or Electrical aptitude is essential.
- Basic understanding of mechanical and electrical propulsion and electrical power generating equipment.
- Demonstrated ability to read and interpret electrical and piping system diagrams, schematics and drawings.
- Knowledge of diesel engines and gas turbines.
- Knowledge of shipboard damage control systems.
- Knowledge of hydraulic systems and shipboard deck equipment.
- Knowledge of Auxiliary and/or HVAC systems.
Desire and ability to work in a shipyard environment required.
Ability to maintain proficiency in shipboard engineering plant terminology and operations; retain knowledge of industrial or marine ancillary machinery systems installation and operation required.
ADDITIONAL GUIDELINESCandidates must meet the following employment eligibility guidelines to be considered for employment with Austal USA:
- 18 years of age or older at time of application.
- Able to provide proof of US Person Status.
- No felony convictions of Theft/Deception or Violent crimes within seven years from disposition date.
- No felony convictions of Drug crimes within three years from disposition date.
- Willing to submit to a drug screen.
- Willing to submit to a background check.
- The ability to obtain and maintain a DoD clearance may be required if deemed necessary in the scope of your position responsibilities.
This position will require repair efforts in various off‑site locations and will be required to travel to customer sites to support work on vessels if deemed necessary in the scope of your position responsibilities. The potential for off‑site travel can potentially be in excess of 15‑25%. Some overseas travel is possible although NO TRAVEL to declared warzones is anticipated.
