The Housekeeper/Custodian classification works in both the medical/clinic and facilities/maintenance settings. In the medical/clinic setting, this position will be responsible for disinfecting rooms and equipment, collecting and disposing of infectious waste, and maintaining office areas, conference rooms, bathrooms, and general areas. In the facilities/maintenance setting, this position will be responsible for maintaining County buildings. Assignments may include maintaining office areas, conference rooms, and bathrooms, operating heavy floor and cleaning equipment and performing other custodial duties.

Individuals in either specialty work under general supervision, with duties increasing in responsibility and independence as warranted. The Housekeeper‑Custodian position is subject to shift hours. Performs related duties as assigned.

The Position

The General Services Agency Facilities Maintenance team is committed to planning, developing, and maintaining clean, safe, sustainable, and high-quality working environments for over 4,900 County employees. The department is currently looking to fill two vacancies. The Housekeeper/Custodian position is subject to shift hours and weekend work and may be eligible for shift differential compensation.

Typical Tasks

• Vacuum, spot clean and shampoo carpets;
• Sweep, strip‑wax, damp mop, wax and buff bathroom and office floors, building entrances, stairwells, and hallways; operate heavy floor equipment, including buffers and scrubbers.
• Clean and disinfect bathrooms, drinking fountains, furniture and equipment, office areas, hallways, conference rooms; lobbies, general areas, entrances, and stairwells, both indoor and outdoor; wipe down surfaces, spray large areas wearing personal protective equipment;
• Clean and empty wastebaskets and trash cans, dispose of contents and reline cans, replenish bathroom supplies including toilet paper, soap, and paper towel;

• Clean, dust, polish and shampoo furniture;
• Clean and dust baseboards and light fixtures;
• Clean air vent covers;
• Arrange conference rooms, move tables, desks, chairs, files, and other furniture as needed;
• Clean and maintain janitorial equipment, keeps track of supply level and requests replenishment as needed;
• Deliver, move, and collect supplies, linen, furniture, and other items;
• Prepare reports and report necessary repairs and hazards; and
• Train less experienced staff.

When Assigned to a medical/clinical setting

• Collect and dispose of medical infectious waste in accordance with all mandated standards;
• Clean and disinfect infectious patient examination rooms and medical equipment;
• Replace and remove soiled linen; and
• Perform related duties as assigned.

When Assigned to General Services Agency

• Respond to unplanned orders to clean up things such as homeless debris, vandalism, clogged toilets, and hazardous materials such as used syringes, feces, vomit, blood, dead birds, bird droppings, and large amounts of trash;
• Clean parking lots and other outdoor areas;
• Make minor repairs such as tightening nuts and bolts, and changing light bulbs; and
• Perform related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Education/Experience)

Knowledge

• Appropriate custodial equipment, supplies and solutions which are needed to perform specific custodial tasks;
• Safe procedures for disinfecting and/or disposing of contaminated equipment, materials and indoor and outdoor areas; and
• Modern and effective methods and techniques used for cleaning and maintaining building fixtures and facilities, such as shampooing carpets, stripping floor wax and disinfecting bathroom fixtures.

Skills/Abilities

• Efficiently operate light to moderate heavy cleaning equipment;
• Learn to clean and disinfect a variety of surfaces and areas;
• Use proper precautions when dealing with infectious materials and chemical or biological hazards encountered in the course of work;
• Physically perform job tasks such as push, pull or lift tables, desks, chairs, etc.;
• Understand and efficiently follow simple oral and/or written instructions from supervisor regarding custodial duties;
• Perform custodial duties with increasingly minimal directions from supervisor;
• Proficiently speak, read, write, and understand the English language;
• Interpret SDS sheets, hazard warnings and ingredient lists and to communicate concerns to supervisor or manager;
• Understand poison warnings and ingredient listings on container or solution labels; and
• Write out supply requisitions.

Education/Experience

• Six (6) months of full‑time, professional janitorial experience performing general custodial duties.
