Summary – Oversees cleaning of the building and assures grounds are well maintained to ensure a safe, attractive, comfortable, clean, and efficient learning environment.
Qualifications- Basic skills in carpentry, plumbing, and painting to make minor repairs.
- Recordkeeping skills to maintain custodial schedules, order supplies, monitor supply usage, and complete reports.
- Communications skills for interviewing, conveying work tasks, and training custodial staff.
- Leadership skills to supervise custodial staff.
- Manual skills to perform cleaning tasks and minor repairs of buildings and equipment.
- Mechanical skills to operate cleaning and grounds keeping equipment.
- Planning skills to plan custodial staff work schedules and ensure sufficient supplies are on hand.
- Common arithmetical functions for determining supplies needed and for measuring/mixing chemicals.
- Must pass a pre-employment physical exam, which includes drug testing.
- Performs work, including but not limited to maintaining a clean, safe, and comfortable school building environment; maintaining clean and attractive grounds; performing as a working custodial supervisor; preparing building reports; maintaining records; conducting minor maintenance on building/fixtures/furnishings, and cleaning/grounds keeping equipment.
- Maintains daily communication with the school Principal for any special needs of the day.
- Reports immediately any damage or vandalism to facilities or theft of equipment.
- Exhibits and demonstrates interpersonal skills to relate well with students, staff, coworkers, administration, parents, and the community.
- Conducts minor maintenance on building/fixtures/furnishings and cleaning/grounds keeping equipment. Replaces light bulbs and fluorescent lamps; paints interior walls; repairs plumbing fixtures, furniture, and locks; and makes minor cleaning/groundskeeping equipment repairs.
- Maintains a clean, safe, and comfortable school building environment. Cleans and disinfects restrooms and drinking fountains; cleans cafeteria, gymnasium, classrooms, windows, and hallways; waxes, buffs, and strips floors; opens/closes building; conducts building walk-throughs with health and fire inspectors; regulates heat and air conditioning systems for safe and effective operation; moves furniture or equipment within the building; sets up building areas for special events;
disposes of trash, rubbish, and waste following local laws, regulations, and procedures. - Maintains clean and attractive school grounds. Mows grass, rakes leaves, trims trees and shrubs; cuts weeds; mulches existing vegetation and mulches new plantings; cleans drains, curbs, and walkways; checks playground equipment for safety; removes snow and ice from sidewalks and building entrances and oversees the removal of snow from driveways and parking lots.
- Performs as a working custodial supervisor. Directs activities of custodians; schedules work; spot checks work performed; provides evaluation information to Principal regarding custodian performance; orders cleaning and maintenance supplies for the building; maintains an inventory of cleaning and maintenance supplies; issues supplies; monitors supply needs and usage and controls use of supplies and materials within budget limitations.
- Prepares building reports and maintenance records. Creates fire safety and sanitation reports and reads and records oil levels for the heating system as applicable.
- Works independently. Work tasks are clear-cut and directly related to custodians. Flexibility to shift priorities as necessary.
- Decisions made involve allocating work, ordering supplies, and determining when to call maintenance for repairs.
- Operate and maintain all tools and equipment necessary to carry out job functions and responsibilities in a safe and operational condition.
- Communicates general information with school staff, students, and visitors with a customer service attitude.
- Protects the confidentiality of records and information gained as part of exercising professional duties and use discretion in sharing such information.
- Serves as a role model for students and staff in demonstrating positive attitudes, appropriate attire and grooming, and an effective work ethic. Must be customer service-oriented.
- Must be a self-starter and team player.
- Displays ethical and professional behavior in working with students, parents, school personnel, and outside agencies associated with the school.
- Adheres to federal statutes and regulations, Connecticut school law, State Board of Education rules and regulations, Board of Education policies and procedures, and contractual obligations.
