Position: SENIOR MAINTENANCE WORKER

A Senior Maintenance Worker is a journey level position that receives general supervision from a Crew Leader and is responsible for performing a variety of more complex tasks in the cleaning and maintenance of city streets, parks and/or facilities. The Senior Maintenance Worker provides hands‑on training for lower‑level staff, delegates work, checks on and reviews work of staff, and may be required to make decisions in the absence of a Crew Leader.

Senior Maintenance Workers will work standby on a rotational shift, and may also be required to work evenings, weekends, and/or holidays.

Duties

The Maintenance Services Division is responsible for conducting routine maintenance activities ranging from patching potholes and repairing damaged sidewalk to overseeing the city’s street sweeping contract and preparing the city’s roads for the annual slurry seal program that repairs the asphalt streets. When assigned to Streets, the duties of a Senior Maintenance Worker include, but are not limited to:

  • Operates various sizes and types of trucks and trailers to move equipment and materials
  • Performs a variety of heavy manual labor
  • Cross‑trains and oversees 2‑3 Maintenance Workers
  • Assists Crew Leader with employee performance evaluations
  • Ensures that supplies, tools, equipment, and staff are ready at the start of shift
  • Monitors work site to assure that safety rules and regulations are followed
  • Completes work order requests

Qualification Guidelines Experience And Education

Any combination of experience and education that could likely provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities would be qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:

  • Three years' experience in construction maintenance work or related labor or skilled work; AND
  • Completion of high school or GED
Licenses

Possession of a valid California Class C Motor Vehicle Operator’s License is required at time of appointment. Ability to obtain a valid Class B California Motor Vehicle Operator’s License within 12 months of appointment is required and is a condition of continued employment (unless medically unable to qualify).

Physical Effort

Requires some physical effort including bending, stooping, climbing and lifting items weighing 20 - 100 lbs. Tasks are occasionally performed in inclement weather.

    The City contributes up to $100/mo toward dental insurance for the employee & eligible dependents.
  • VISION INSURANCE:
    The City contributes up to $30/mo toward vision insurance for employee and eligible dependents.
  • LIFE INSURANCE:
    The City provides a $100,000 life insurance policy. Additional life insurance is available.
  • LONG TERM DISABILITY INSURANCE:
    The City pays the premium for long-term disability insurance for the employee.
  • RETIREMENT:
    Employees are covered by the Public Employees' Retirement System at, 2.7%@55 (Classic), single highest year or 2%@62 (PEPRA), three average years, as determined by PEPRA. Classic members pay the full 8% and new members pay 7.25% of the employee contribution. The City does not participate in the Social Security System, except for the mandatory 1.45% Medicare contribution.
