Position: Custodian I

The purpose of this position is to perform a wide variety of custodial and maintenance duties in order to provide a clean, orderly and safe environment on campus.

  • Clean and sanitize restrooms/bathrooms using established practices and procedure.
  • Clean, dust, and wipe furniture; sweep, mop, or vacuum floors; empty/clean wastebaskets and trash containers; empty and clean ash trays and cigarette urns; replace light bulbs; refill restroom dispensers.
  • Assist with the setup of facilities for meetings, classrooms, conferences, events, etc.
  • Use and maintain assigned power equipment and hand tools; extractors, high pressure washers, and vacuums, brooms, mops, and squeegees for the cleaning and general maintenance of walls, floors, carpets, furniture, etc.
  • Wash walls and equipment; use ladders when required in work assignments.
  • Assist with securing building when facilities are not in use checking for unlocked doors and windows, report any unauthorized occupants, turn off lights.
  • Follow instructions regarding the use of chemicals and supplies. Use as directed.
  • Perform cleaning and related activities such as removing debris from sidewalks and stairs at the entrance of buildings.
  • Move furniture, equipment, supplies and tools on an incidental basis.
  • Wash accessible interior and exterior windows. Clean blinds. Launder cleaning rags and dust mops.
  • Attend to emergencies when necessary.
  • Attend safety meetings and other related meetings.
  • Take classes as required in cleaning methods and techniques, new products, First Aid, CPR, and working relationships.
  • Handle recycling materials.
  • Safely operate all vehicles and other job related equipment.
  • Support and enforce all policies, university and governmental such as ADEM, university health and safety regulations and guidelines, etc.
  • Report and respond to emergency calls for custodial assistance.
  • Identify stains and use proper chemicals and methods for removal.
  • Work with some pesticides; safely dispose of hazardous materials commonly used in the performance of duties.
  • Perform related duties as required.
  • Call in work orders and complete work orders as assigned.
  • Assist with inventory control and security.
  • Additional Duties

    Education and Experience

    High School diploma or GED. One year of related experience in custodial and building maintenance in a school setting is preferred.

    • Valid driver’s license
    • Acceptable driving record
