Salary Information
Compensation plans are based on a multi-step progression system. The pay range reflects the entry level and maximum salary potential in the assigned pay grade.

Nature of Work
The fundamental reason this classification exists is to perform highly skilled technical work in the installation, repair, and maintenance of the City of Montgomery's electronic traffic control devices and computerized control and communication systems. Work requires a broad range of electronics technical knowledge and is performed with considerable independence of judgment. Primary work responsibilities may include: monitoring traffic from the Traffic Management Center (TMC);
installing and programming electronic traffic control devices and supporting equipment; responding to service requests and calls; and performing diagnostic checks and repairs to electronic traffic control devices, fiber optic cables, and supporting equipment. The ITS Technician I is distinguished from the ITS Technician II in that the ITS Technician II serves as the lead worker onsite and typically performs more complex technical duties.
The ITS Technician I receives technical guidance from the Electronic Technician II and receives supervision from the Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) Manager.
Minimum Qualifications
An Associate's degree in Electronics, Electronic Technology, Computer Science, Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS), or a closely related field and one (1) year of experience in electronics, or electrical systems, with a strong focus on the installation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of traffic signal systems to include basic network switches, fiber optic patch panels, and cabling for network devices, AC/DC electrical experience and the ability to troubleshoot circuits using multimeters or other test equipment, familiarity with Cat5/Cat6 and COAX cable terminations and testing, as well as a thorough knowledge of current desktop technologies, serial communications, and TCP/IP concepts, is essential.

Qualifying education, training, and experience that provide the requisite knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the job will be considered.
Special Requirements
Must possess, or be able to obtain within two years of employment, a Traffic Signals Level 1 Certification from the IMSA (International Municipal Signal Association). Must possess a valid Alabama driver's license and insurable driving record as needed to operate City vehicles. Must be able to attend specialized training or classes as needed to maintain or increase skills and update equipment.
Must be willing to be on call for 24 hours a day/seven days a week at least once a month.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Physical ability to lift from 50 to 150 pounds (assisted or unassisted) such as the traffic controller cabinet. Physical ability to stand, stoop, bend and crouch as needed to make repairs, replacements or adjustments to equipment. Physical ability to distinguish between colors as needed to differentiate between color-coded wires and signal lights in order to make repairs.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
Work is performed in a variety of uncontrolled work environments including but not limited to at heights up to 50 feet above ground, in unkempt areas with tall weeds and exposure to local wildlife, and in close proximity to heavy traffic traveling at speeds exceeding 50 miles per hour. Work is performed in a variety of weather conditions with exposure to the elements to include extreme heat, cold, rain, and lightning.
Work will require some overtime, night, weekend, and holiday hours as well as after hours on-call duty.
