Position: ITS Electronic Technician I

Salary Information

Compensation plans are based on a multi-step progression system. The pay range reflects the entry level and maximum salary potential in the assigned pay grade.

A starting salary may be negotiated and will be commensurate with education, training and experience in alignment with pay administration policies and Montgomery Personnel Board Rules & Regulations.

Nature of Work

Primary duties include monitoring traffic from the Traffic Management Center; installing and programming electronic traffic control devices and supporting equipment; responding to service requests and calls; and performing diagnostic checks and repairs to electronic traffic control devices, fiber optic cables, and supporting equipment. The ITS Technician I performs less complex duties than the ITS Technician II and receives technical guidance from the Electronic Technician II and supervision from the Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) Manager.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Associate’s degree in Electronics, Electronic Technology, Computer Science, Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS), or a closely related field.
  • One (1) year of experience in electronics or electrical systems with a focus on installation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of traffic signal systems, including basic network switches, fiber optic patch panels, and cabling.
  • Experience with AC/DC electrical circuits, use of multimeters or test equipment, familiarity with Cat5/Cat6 and COAX cable terminations and testing.
  • Knowledge of desktop technologies, serial communications, and TCP/IP concepts.
  • Qualifying education, training, and experience that provide the requisite knowledge, skills and abilities will be considered.
Special Requirements
  • Must possess, or be able to obtain within two years of employment, a Traffic Signals Level 1 Certification from IMSA (International Municipal Signal Association).
  • Must possess a valid Alabama driver’s license and maintain an insurable driving record as required to operate city vehicles.
  • Must be willing to attend specialized training or classes as needed to maintain or increase skills and update equipment.
  • Must be willing to be on call for 24 hours a day, seven days a week at least once a month.
Physical Requirements

Physical ability to lift 50 to 150 pounds (assisted or unassisted), stand, stoop, bend, and crouch as needed to make repairs or adjustments. Physical ability to distinguish colors to differentiate between color-coded wires and signal lights.

Working Conditions

Work performed in uncontrolled environments, including heights up to 50 feet, unkempt areas with tall weeds, exposure to wildlife, and proximity to heavy traffic at speeds exceeding 50 mph. Exposure to weather conditions such as heat, cold, rain, and lightning. Overtime, night, weekend, holiday hours, and after-hours on-call duty may be required.
