Position: Custodian(s) (night) (M-F 2:30PM - 11PM)

Position Overview

Custodian (Night) – Monday to Friday, 2:30 PM to 11:00 PM. Job . Available immediately. Must be on call after normal hours to maintain and repair heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems.

Qualifications
  • Demonstrated ability in skills and knowledge needed for responsibilities and willingness to obtain training.
  • Must complete within one year of employment a Black Seal Boiler License course.
  • Must possess, or acquire within one year of employment, a Black Seal Boiler License (not required for hires prior to July 7, 1997).
  • Must be available to provide emergency service after normal work hours for HVAC maintenance.
  • Demonstrated ability to work well with others.
  • Other alternatives deemed appropriate by the Board of Education.
General Responsibilities

The custodian shall be responsible for the proper care and cleaning of the building and grounds, maintain the facility in good repair, safe and comfortable for students and staff, and collect recyclable materials for proper disposal.

Specific Duties Daily
  • Dust, mop and vacuum all floors; spot‑clean and use damp mop where required.
  • Mop kitchens, cafeterias, lavatories, locker rooms and shower rooms with germicidal cleaner; wash and disinfect all garbage cans.
  • Wash all drinking fountains, sinks, toilet bowls, urinals with germicidal cleaner.
  • Empty waste baskets, refuse receptacles and pencil sharpeners; transport all trash and recyclables to proper containers.
  • Clean chalkboards, chalk rails, whiteboards, mirrors and chrome fixtures.
  • Remove broken furniture to maintenance area for repair.
  • Refill all towel, toilet tissue, soap, and sanitary napkin dispensers.
  • Inspect for broken glass, functioning windows and doors, obstructed drains, burned‑out bulbs, water leaks, unusual motor or fan noises, odor; report in writing to building foreman or supervisor.
  • Ensure all windows and doors are closed and locked; turn off all necessary fans and lights.
  • Remove garbage and recyclables from cafeteria after each lunch period while on duty.
  • Raise and lower the American flag.
  • Assist with receipt and delivery of supplies throughout the building.
During the Week
  • Remove graffiti, gum deposits, markings and smudges from furniture, painted and tile walls, door glass, frames, etc.
  • Dust furniture, window ledges, shelves, maps, globes, charts, display cases, bleachers, lockers.
  • Replace mops and supplies in closets (towels, tissues, soap, germicidal detergent, disinfectant, light bulbs, stripper, floor finish).
  • Scrub shower room walls with germicidal cleaner.
Monthly (as time permits)
  • Strip and refinish or burnish heavy‑traffic tile areas.
  • Wash windows.
  • Dust high surfaces such as vents and light fixtures.
  • Replace filters in HVAC equipment.
While School is Closed (vacations or emergencies)
  • Strip, seal and refinish tile and wood floors.
  • Vacuum and clean all carpeted areas.
  • Wash walls, brush ceilings and perform other major housekeeping chores.
  • Wash windows.
  • Clean furniture.
Miscellaneous Responsibilities
  • Provide custodial services at all student athletic, dramatic, musical and social events, as well as community activities and approved use by outside organizations.
  • Assist other school’s custodial staff during vacations or emergencies such as flooding, vandalism, as directed.
  • Move furniture from room to room and building to building.
  • Know the basic function of mechanical systems and location of all utilities, gas, water, electric, fire alarm, extinguishers, and be able to shut each off in an emergency.
  • Make minor repairs as directed by the building foreman.
  • Know proper use and maintenance requirements for equipment.
  • Perform tasks requiring moderate physical strength, lifting a minimum of 50 lb or more.
  • Assist other custodians as requested.
  • Secure the building and set alarms when leaving after the night shift.
  • Discuss complications with supervisor as needed.
  • Perform necessary snow removal as directed by the Building and Grounds Director.
  • Perform other duties as needed by the general responsibility as assigned by the building or night foreman.
Salary and Benefits

Salary range: $35,000 – $52,000, based upon experience and qualifications. Full‑time employees eligible for medical, prescription, dental benefits, sick, personal and vacation days.
