POSITION SUMMARY

Perform routine and non‑routine analysis of chemical and physical characteristics of finished, raw and processed ingredients and finished stock samples. Conduct microbiological analyses on all ingredients and finished stock. Utilize prescribed methodology and techniques in at least two of three laboratory areas (RI, FI or Micro). May act in control of raw ingredients or finished stock via sampling, inspections and recording.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Approve and release raw ingredients, processed ingredients, finished ingredients and finished stock according to established procedures.
  • Communicate the status of raw, finished, processed ingredient and microbiological analyses to the appropriate department.
  • Report test results that are out of specification.
  • Standardize and calibrate laboratory equipment and analytical instruments in accordance with cGMP requirements.
  • Maintain a complete and cGMP‑compliant notebook.
  • Prepare reagents and test media as directed.
  • Perform finished stock evaluations during line start‑ups, line prep releases and branch inspections.
  • Perform general laboratory duties such as glassware maintenance, chemical inventory management, receipt and logging of standard samples and chemicals; store samples in non‑lab areas such as basement or warehouse.
  • Maintain notebooks, records, logs and files related to all functions.
  • Review and verify drug calculations and laboratory notebooks for accuracy.
  • Participate in routine audits of facility records for cGMP compliance.
  • Understand facility systems related to control and release of quarantined materials such as FSC, finished ingredients and raw materials.
  • Follow safety policies and maintain good housekeeping in the work area.
  • Perform analytical and identification determinations using instrumentation such as HPLC, GC (thermal and flame), IR spectrophotometer, UV/Vis spectrophotometer, X‑ray and Karl Fisher.
  • Make adjustments to finished ingredient batches that are out of specification.
  • Monitor processing steps in the manufacture of first manufactured batches and selected problem products with lab management personnel.
  • Shade‑match and problem‑solve make‑up products.
  • Maintain standard samples of raw ingredients, perfume oils and finished ingredients.
  • Handle collection and disposal of hazardous waste and waste solvents from the lab and HPLC equipment in line with safety and environmental regulations.
  • Sample incoming ingredients or materials when applicable.
  • Perform tests to determine the microbiological quality of processing and packaging machines (e.g., swabbing, sterility tests).
  • Conduct environmental sampling and testing of ambient air, compressed air, and process water.
  • Prepare media to support all testing within the micro‑lab.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
SKILLS, EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
  • Strong analytical, mathematical, deductive and analytical reasoning skills.
  • Basic computer skills (Word, Excel, Access).
  • Competency in operational systems such as Lab, MRP and Warehouse.
  • Working knowledge of microbiological and/or chemical principles and analytical procedures.
  • Knowledge of cGMP requirements for topical OTC manufacturing laboratories.
  • Minimum 4‑year degree in chemistry, biology or related field, including instrumental analysis or equivalent experience.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Responsible for all analytical and microbial testing on raw, processed, finished ingredients, finished stock and retains.
  • Calibrate instruments and standardize solutions.
  • Organize testing to maximize efficiency by grouping similar tests.
  • Interpret test data and report suspect findings to the Chemist/Supervisor.
  • Work with minimal supervision, including overtime.
  • Accurately record all laboratory results.
  • Wear all required PPE in the laboratory.
  • Maintain professionalism in all situations.
  • Maintain confidentiality of Company information.
