Healthcare Nursing, RN Nurse
The Registered Nurse provides nursing care to patients in compliance with recognized Standards of Practice, State Practice Act Standards, and organization protocols, policies, procedures, and guidelines. The RN supervises and directs patient care in a single operating room.
As a representative of this facility, all comments, attitudes, actions, and behaviors have a direct effect on the center's image and perceptions of quality service. Interaction with patients, physicians, referral sources, guests, visitors, volunteer workers, co‑workers, supervisors, vendors, etc. must be performed in a friendly, supportive, courteous, respectful, cooperative, and professional manner to promote teamwork and positive relations.
Responsibilities- Assess patient and family needs to provide quality care to assigned patients.
- Organize time, equipment, supplies, and personnel to provide effective and efficient case management.
- Consider cost containment by using supplies economically and in effective turnover time.
- Prepare the operating room according to the requirements of the patient/procedure to be performed.
- Implement the plan of care safely and effectively and provide a safe environment, including positioning patient safely, padding bony prominences, ensuring respiratory and circulatory protection, ensuring correct prepping and draping procedures, and conducting the “time out” process prior to incision to ensure correct patient, correct procedures and correct surgical site.
- Ensure asepsis during all procedures; open and present sterile items to sterile fields aseptically; ensure supplies are not expired.
- Account for all sponges, needles, sharps during and after procedures and document appropriately, including promoting positive communication with all team members.
- Anticipate needs of the surgical team and assist anesthesia personnel by supporting patients during administration of anesthesia.
- Attend all required safety training programs and describe responsibilities related to general safety, center/service safety, and specific job‑related hazards.
- Follow the center exposure control plans for blood borne and airborne pathogens.
- Work variable hours and be flexible to meet the needs of the center’s daily surgery schedule.
- Maintain current knowledge, certification, and licensure.
- Maintain a clean and safe work environment.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) is required.
- Valid State of Illinois Registered Nurse license is required.
- BLS and ALS certifications are required.
- PALS certification is preferred.
- Minimum two (2) years of experience in orthopedic surgery is required.
- Ambulatory surgery center experience is preferred.
- Knowledge in medical terminology is preferred.
- Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals; ability to compute ratio, rate, and percent.
- Ability to communicate well and effectively present information to patients, families, co‑workers, etc.
- Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from patients, regulatory agencies, or members of the business community.
- Ability to communicate in verbal and written methods.
- Ability to set priorities.
- Superior interpersonal skills.
- Regular standing, walking, sitting, and talking or hearing.
- Occasional use of hands to finger, handle, or feel and reach with hands and arms.
- Frequent lifting or moving up to 10 pounds and occasional lifting or moving up to 50 pounds.
- Specific vision abilities required include close vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
- Occasional exposure to moderate noise levels.
- Possible exposure to communicable diseases transmitted by patients and co‑workers.
