Performs routine unskilled manual work in the repair and maintenance of public streets and facilities and the collection of solid waste; performs related duties as required.
Employees in this position operate daily duties related to street maintenance and solid waste collection. The work is performed under the direction of the Training/Field Supervisor and is reviewed for results obtained and consistency with standard practices.
Essential Job Functions- Picks up garbage containers, yard waste, etc., dumps into trucks and operates packer equipment
- Cleans areas around truck or worksite as required
- Operates pickups or other types of medium duty trucks
- Performs various street maintenance duties such as cleaning gutters, repairing curbs, patching holes, spreading asphalt and replacing sidewalks
- Loads and unloads gravel, dirt, chemicals and other materials, tools and equipment; cuts grass and trees, rakes leaves; picks up trash and empties trash containers; operates a variety of mowers and equipment in grass cutting and trimming operations; picks up paper and debris on public property and streets
- Performs basic custodial, painting, maintenance and repair tasks
- Assists in the repair, installation and maintenance of drainage lines, ditches and related facilities
- Operates various types of equipment in performance of maintenance tasks if qualified
This position involves very heavy work requiring the employee to exert over 100 pounds of force occasionally and less force frequently to move objects. Physical activity may include climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, talking, hearing, and repetitive motions. Sufficient visual acuity is required to determine the accuracy and neatness of work performed. The employee will be exposed to indoor and outdoor environmental conditions;
hazards include exposure to working mechanical parts, chemicals, extreme heat and cold, noise and vibrations, and potential exposure to blood‑borne pathogens.
Skills and Abilities
Ability to understand and follow specific oral instructions; ability to perform manual labor for extended periods, often under unfavorable weather conditions; ability to operate tools and equipment safely; ability to work with others; dependability.
Acceptable Experience and TrainingCompletion of the eighth grade and some experience in performance of heavy manual work desirable; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.
Additional RequirementMust possess a valid North Carolina Driver's License.
