Custodian Temporary

Position Summary

Temporary custodian positions. No benefits. A custodian is the key University and Facilities Management person in maintaining cleanliness of academic, residential, and administrative campus buildings and service areas. Performs manual custodial tasks in care of University buildings; performs related work as required.

• Operate mechanical cleaning and scrubbing equipment.
• Operate carpet shampooing and upholstery cleaning equipment.
• Sweep, mop, strip, and wax floor surfaces.
• Maintain entrances and surrounding areas by picking up litter, cigarette butts, sweeping, shoveling snow, removing ice, spreading sand and salt, etc.
• Operate vacuum cleaning equipment.
• Cleans and waxes furniture, cases, fixtures, and furnishings.
• Clean mirrors and interior glass.
• Unplug commodes, urinals, and sink drains without dismantling the fixture.
• Clean restrooms and replenish restroom supplies.
• Spot wash walls.
• Make beds and change linens in guest rooms.
• Collect and dispose of waste materials.
• Report repair work and/or damages to the building.
• Sweep, dust, and wet-mop stairs and stairwells.
• Replace light bulbs and broken globes as needed.
• Move and arrange furniture and furnishings.
• Wash interior and exterior windows.
• Empty all trash containers and remove to pick‑up stations.
• Keep routine records and make routine reports.

• High school education or equivalent.
• Possession of a valid Michigan driver’s license may be required.
• Working knowledge of cleaning materials and methods.
• Demonstrated ability to follow and/or interpret verbal and/or written directions.
• Demonstrated positive interpersonal skills.
• Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively and project a positive image.
• Ability to perform the essential functions and requirements of the job.

• Experience operating mechanical cleaning equipment.
• Experience with carpet shampooing and upholstery cleaning.
• Experience in commercial or institutional custodial services.

Pay Range: $15.81 per hour.

Full‑time hours available for summer assignments only.
