Salary range: $90,000 - $100,000

The Senior Accountant is responsible for the integrity of the organization's financial records and reporting. This role maintains the general ledger, performs complex accounting analyses, oversees key accounting functions, supports budgeting and forecasting processes, and ensures compliance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), grant requirements, and organizational policies

Key Responsibilities

General Accounting

  • Prepares and presents financial statements and related analysis to management and staff.
  • Administers grant accounting activities, including monitoring expenditures, reviewing allowability of costs, preparing reimbursement requests, ensuring compliance with grant agreements, and supporting grant audits.
  • Supports and strengthens internal control processes by identifying risks, documenting procedures, and recommending process improvements.
  • Collaborates with Accounting, Finance, and Information Technology staff to optimize the use of AI technologies within accounting systems, reporting platforms, and business processes.
  • Reviews restricted fund statements monthly, creating a report to determine journal entries for short- and long-term gains and losses, interest, and advisor fees.
  • Participates in the monthly and year-end close process.
  • Maintains fixed asset accounting records and depreciation schedules, ensuring asset additions, transfers, and disposals are accurately recorded.
  • Assists the Controller with the indirect cost rate submission by reviewing
    audited financial statements, creating workbooks detailing the direct versus indirect expenses, and constructing a detailed salary analysis to determine the fringe benefit and indirect cost rates for SCCM grants.
  • Provides direct supervision, training, and performance oversight for the Accounts Payable Administrator and Staff Accountant.
  • Supervises
    the processing of 1096 and 1099-NEC tax forms, which includes reviewing individual and vendor balances, addresses, and tax identification numbers to be submitted to the IRS yearly.
  • Assists in the implementation and maintenance of SCCM’s accounting and database management software, including CRM, Dynamics 365, and Zetadocs.
  • Analyzes the monthly budget/forecast to actual variance reports per program and department.
  • Performs general account analysis and reconciliations as assigned.
  • Prepares year-end and audit schedules as assigned.

II. Budgeting and Financial Forecasts

  • Coordinates and supports the organization's annual budgeting process, partnering with department leaders to develop budgets and analyze financial assumptions.
  • Prepares budget reports for review by senior and volunteer leadership.
  • Creates capital budget for leadership detailing planned asset acquisitions and determining potential depreciation expenses for future years.
  • Creates staff salary budget for leadership detailing all current staff expenses and projecting future years.
  • Supports the development of financial forecasts and models by staff.
  • Provides monthly financial forecasts with variance reporting.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting
  • Certified Public Accountant (CPA)
  • Experience with ERP/accounting systems required;
    Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central and Jet Reports preferred.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, PowerPoint, especially Excel)
    required.
  • Minimum 5 years of progressive accounting experience required; nonprofit accounting and grant management experience preferred. Background in budget preparation and financial reporting is a plus.
  • Excellent communication skills, written and verbal, with the ability to clearly communicate issues to all levels of management.
