North Cook Intermediate Service Center operates an alternative school, North Cook Young Adult Academy (NCYAA). NCYAA is a Regional Safe School Program that embraces second chances through alternative educational opportunities for students in grades 6‑12. Dedicated to providing a positive, safe, and inclusive learning environment for all learners, NCYAA promotes social‑emotional growth through a focus on the five core competencies: self‑awareness, self‑management, social awareness, responsible decision‑making, and relationship skills.
Academics are centered around students’ individual differences, strengths, and challenges. NCYAA empowers students to develop respect and responsibility for themselves and their communities, with an emphasis on lifelong learning and positive community contribution.
The ESL Endorsed Teacher is responsible for providing specialized instruction and support to English Language Learners (ELLs) in grades 6 through 12. The teacher will create a positive and inclusive learning environment, develop lesson plans tailored to students’ language proficiency levels, and assess student progress. Additionally, the teacher will collaborate with colleagues, communicate with parents/guardians, and contribute to the overall development and success of ELL students within an alternative learning environment.

Essential Duties Instruction- Teach assigned subjects to middle and high school students with an emphasis on supporting English Language Learners.
- Implement the individualized program established for each student in his/her Alternative Education Program (AEP).
- Through the use of an approved curriculum, provide instruction in specific skill areas to a diverse student population.
- Implement individualized language development plans for ELL students.
- Provide accommodations and modifications as needed to support student learning.
- Use research‑based strategies to support language acquisition across content areas.
- Prepare appropriate supplemental instructional materials and experiences which will enhance learning opportunities for all students.
- Develop and modify lesson plans that align with students’ language proficiency levels.
- Assess student progress in both language and academic content using a variety of tools.
- Utilize diverse teaching techniques to engage ELL students and foster language development.
- Engage students in the learning process.
- Hold students accountable for their academic performance.
- Maintain up‑to‑date and accurate records, including but not limited to: a grade book, contact log sheets, progress reports, and report cards.
- Prepare for and participate in parent/teacher conferences.
- Communicate with parents about student progress.
- Serve as primary contact for parents of homeroom students.
- Attend all staff meetings and professional development seminars.
- Fully and consistently adhere to all policies and procedures delineated in the North Cook Young Adult Academy Policy Manual and the NCISC Policy Manual.
- Fulfill other responsibilities, as assigned by supervisory personnel.
- Support fellow staff members.
- Assist students in feeling vested in their own learning processes and foster a welcoming and supportive classroom environment.
- Hold students accountable for their behavioral performance and implement behavior management strategies to promote a positive culturally responsive learning experience.
- Assist with behavior management when not teaching classes.
- Implement behavior management plans (BIP).
- Maintain a learning environment (classroom and school).
- Complete other responsibilities as assigned.
- Illinois PEL with an English as a Second Language (ESL) or Bilingual Endorsement required.
- Experience working with English Language Learners preferred.
- Knowledge of language acquisition strategies and best practices for ELL instruction.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to work effectively with diverse student populations, families, and staff.
