Summary
The Pet Care Assistant works with the veterinary medical team to provide and prepare for the best medical care of pets, ensuring a welcoming and efficient environment that encourages clients to return and recommend the hospital.
Responsibilities- Prepare the treatment room with all necessary medical items and supplies (e.g., vaccinations, fecal loops, slides).
- Set up fecal smears, skin scrapings, and other routine samples as permitted by state rules.
- Maintain the Flow of Service in accordance with position protocols.
- Provide client education regarding preventive care, Optimum Wellness Plans, and basic status of hospitalized pets.
- Support the Client Services Coordinator on an as‑needed basis.
- Hold or restrain pets during examination, treatment, or inoculation.
- Prepare routine in‑house laboratory tests (e.g., canine heartworm, feline leukemia, FIV, canine parvovirus) as allowed by state rules.
- Monitor and ensure comfort of hospitalized patients by walking, exercising, feeding, and cleaning cages when approved by the veterinarian or technician.
- Bathe and dip pets as needed to treat dermatological conditions when advised.
- Clean the surgical suite and instruments and maintain overall cleanliness of the hospital, including housekeeping tasks such as laundry, dishwashing, mopping, cage cleaning, trash removal, and instrument cleaning.
- Perform other assigned duties as required.
- High School Diploma preferred; at least 18 years old for roles involving radiography.
- One year of related experience; customer service experience preferred.
- Ability to multi‑task, manage several tasks simultaneously, and shift attention quickly.
- Excellent written and verbal communication in English.
- Organizational skills with a systematic approach and ability to bring order to chaos.
- Strong problem‑solving skills, translating issues into practical solutions.
- Client service orientation with courteous and informative service.
- Good mathematical ability (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, rates, ratios, percentages, unit conversion).
- Comfortable using a computer and specialized software such as Microsoft Word, Excel, Access, Outlook.
- Initiative, integrity, cooperativeness, flexibility, independence, and resilience under stress.
- Work at a computer for long periods.
- Stand, walk, stoop, kneel, crouch, and climb; lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
- Good hand‑eye coordination, arm‑hand‑finger dexterity, and visual acuity (close, distance, color, peripheral, depth).
- Exposure to pets that may bite or scratch; occasional exposure to anesthesia, radiation, biological hazards, and medications.
- Work may exceed 40 hours per week and include weekends and evenings.
Pay Range: $15.00 – $18.31 per hour (determined by experience, skill level, and education; may vary by location and minimum wage laws).
