Stewards Individual Placements is an Ameri Corps Program that provides individuals with service and career opportunities to strengthen communities and protect natural resources. Participants serve with federal agencies, tribal governments, and nonprofits building institutional capacity, developing community relationships, and supporting the conservation of natural areas. The National Cemetery Investment Initiative rehabilitates cultural areas, historic structures, and facilities in national cemeteries managed by the National Park Service.
ReconstructionResponsibilities
- Stake trees by installing wooden stakes at correct distances and ensuring they do not split or break.
- Measure, cut, and install webbing at the correct heights around trees using proper anchoring techniques.
- Create shallow ditches to mulch around the edge of tree burial sites, installing mulch at correct depths and distances.
- Coordinate with NPS staff to ensure availability of landscaping materials.
- Plant trees by shaping and scarifying the inside of planting holes, removing root obstructions, and positioning trees correctly.
- Backfill holes with care to ensure proper root placement and soil compaction.
- Plan and lead at least one community volunteer project supporting rehabilitation or maintenance of the national cemetery.
- United States citizen, United States national, or lawful permanent resident alien.
- Between the ages of 18 and 30, or up to 35 with veteran status.
- Have a high school diploma or equivalency certificate; or have not dropped out of elementary or secondary school and agree to obtain a diploma or equivalent before using the education award.
- Agrees to provide information for eligibility and complete a National Service Criminal History Check.
- Must have a valid Driver’s License.
- Interest in cultural area management.
- Ability to perform arduous outdoor labor.
The position typically requires 40 hours of service per week Monday‑Friday, with an optional half‑hour lunch break not counted toward Ameri Corps service. Service may involve periodic overnight travel, non‑traditional work hours, and movement across varied terrain. The role may require lifting, carrying, pushing, or pulling up to 25 pounds occasionally, and safe operation of an organizational vehicle if required.
Orientation and Training- Receive orientation on Ameri Corps prohibited and unallowable activities.
- Receive NPS orientation and complete Safety Program, Job Specific Safety Training, and Historic Headstone Cleaning.
- Train on installation measurements, tying webbing anchors, root zone identification, and safe stake pounding.
- Learn hole design, scarifying techniques, and safety around machinery.
- Cover identification of tree burial perimeters, trench creation depth and technique, and mulch installation.
- Opportunity for hands‑on skills training in other area management and historic structure maintenance, including interpretation.
- Segal Ameri Corps Education Award of $1,956.35.
- Living Allowance of $680 per week.
- Housing stipend of $450 per week.
- Professional Development funds of $1,000.
- Loan forbearance if eligible.

- Eligible for Public Land Corps hiring authority upon successful completion of the term.
Performance is evaluated by completing the required number of hours and assignments and meeting other clear criteria set at the beginning of the term. Reporting includes bi‑weekly timesheets and accomplishment tracking.
