Job Purpose

Responsible for delivering comprehensive training programs to new and existing Telecommunications Technicians I – II ensuring proficiency in current technologies and ensuring all functions are completed safely and to MPW's standards, including all equipment and associated cabling, as well as customer interactions.

Perform Telecommunication Technicians I – II functions such as installations, troubleshooting, and replacement of wiring and equipment.

Specific Responsibilities
  • Train and mentor, new and existing Telecommunications Techs I – II in the following areas:
    • Customer interactions
    • Soft skills – Meeting, communicating and working with customers, with emphasis on giving customers reasons to love MPW.
  • Safe and proper installation practice as outlined in apprenticeship programs
    • Equipment – Function, operations, installation
    • Cabling – Proper handling, routing, connectorizing and testing
    • Drop routing for both overhead and underground drops
  • New Communication service offerings and required equipment to support them
  • MPW sales promotions available for Technician use
  • Provide guidance on work procedures and special requests and ensure the delivery of high-quality customer service.
    • Work with the Department Supervisor on resolving all gaps and/or inconsistencies encountered throughout the training process.
  • Conduct quality checks and follow up with customers after installations and service work to ensure work is completed correctly and to MPW specifications and to gain insight into the customer's experience.
    • Conduct additional training sessions with Techs I – II as needed.
    • Make ongoing improvements to practices and processes based on feedback received.
  • Support the Utility's safety programs throughout all aspects of the installation process and by providing thorough training.
  • Identify training material needs, develop and/or collaborate with the Marketing Department to develop materials consistent with these needs and deploy accordingly.
  • Collaborate with the Marketing Department to develop effective customer education materials ensuring they are accurate, informative and aligned with MPW standards and services.
  • Assist Department Manager and Supervisor by providing information related to performance appraisals, budget preparation, and long-range customer experience improvement projects.
  • As time allows or as needed:
    • Perform job functions associated with the Telecommunications Tech I – II positions along with standby coverage.
    • Collect communications equipment, as required.
  • Other Responsibilities
  • Maintain a culture of safety within the department. Support the Utility's safety programs, complete training appropriate for the position, and provide safe working conditions and practices.
  • Maintain a culture of continuous improvement within the department. Utilize lean principles and other continuous improvement tools in an effort to maximize the efficiency of the department.
  • Perform basic fiber splicing and assist Telecommunications Techs I – II with troubleshooting and construction projects.
  • Ensure MPW-provided vehicle is well maintained and properly stocked with required material and equipment to perform job responsibilities.

  • Qualifications Knowledge
  • High school graduate or equivalent.
  • Minimum 4 years of communication system course work or equivalent work experience and a demonstrated ability to train and mentor personnel.
  • Minimum 3 years of customer service experience.
  • Working knowledge of computer software and hardware, mobile devices, and other networked devices.
  • Skills
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with all audiences, including peers and customers.
  • Excellent interpersonal and listening skills, with ability to build productive professional relationships and promote a team atmosphere.
  • Proficiency with use of PCs and relevant business software, including the Microsoft Office suite of products and electronic mapping software.
  • Good problem identification, analysis, and solving skills.
  • Good work planning and project management skills.
