JOB SUMMARY
A hospital maintenance mechanic ensures the safe, efficient, and continuous operation of a healthcare facility's mechanical, electrical, and building structures.
This comprehensive description highlights the technical, safety, and operational responsibilities of a maintenance mechanic in a healthcare setting, emphasizing the importance of preventive maintenance, emergency readiness, and multi-system expertise.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

• Mechanical Systems Maintenance: Maintain and repair HVAC systems, boilers, pumps, and other mechanical equipment to ensure proper function in patient care areas, operating rooms, and labs
• Preventive Maintenance: Perform routine inspections and preventive maintenance to reduce system breakdowns and extend equipment life
• Electrical and Plumbing Repairs: Install, repair, and test electrical circuits, lighting, appliances, and plumbing systems as needed
• Emergency Systems Oversight: Inspect and maintain emergency generators, alarms (Med gas, fire, nurse call lights, tube systems), and backup systems to ensure compliance with safety standards
• Facility Upkeep: Maintain patient rooms and overall building structures to ensure safety and accessibility
• Documentation: Keep accurate records of inspections, repairs, and preventive maintenance activities
Required Skills and Qualifications
• Technical Expertise: Knowledge of HVAC, plumbing, electrical, boiler, and energy systems, including specialized hospital equipment and infrastructure.
• Troubleshooting: Ability to diagnose and repair mechanical failures quickly and efficiently, often under time constraints
• Safety and Compliance: Knowledge of safety codes, health regulations, and environmental standards; ability to follow protocols in highly regulated healthcare environments
EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS
• Minimum of High School or GED required.
• Minimum of 6 months of related experience OR graduate from an HVAC Program required; 3 years of experience preferred in a building
• Minimum computer knowledge:
Email, Work Order System, Microsoft Office
• Physical Requirements: Ability to perform tasks involving bending, kneeling, climbing, and adjusting focus for close and distance vision
• Communication: Ability to read, understand, and follow instructions, manuals, policies and procedures in English as well as safety data sheets.
Work Environment
• Hospital maintenance mechanics work in occupied, climate-controlled, and highly regulated spaces, requiring precision and adherence to safety protocols
• The role may involve shift work, including weekends and after-hours, to ensure continuous facility operation
Additional Considerations
• Preventive and corrective maintenance is critical to avoid disruptions in patient care.
• Hands-on skills in carpentry, painting, masonry, and general building repair are often required along with other duties requested by Management.
• The position supports operational continuity, patient comfort, and safety, making it essential to hospital functionality.
