Position Description
Custodians with the Parks & Recreation Department perform a variety of cleaning service tasks to keep public grounds and buildings clean, orderly, and maintained. They also perform related duties as required and may be required to travel to various locations to perform assigned duties.
Work Schedule- Work schedules may include weekends, some evenings, night‑shift, and holidays.
Metro's Parks and Recreation Department offers a wide range of facilities and programs including cultural arts and fitness classes, dog parks, nature programs, 16,000 acres of open space with 6 municipal golf courses, 121 parks, and 19 greenways. It also hosts ice hockey, sports leagues, art galleries, and more.
Typical Duties- Cleans and maintains buildings.
- Sweeps and mops halls, rooms, rest rooms, stairways, and other public areas.
- Strips, waxes, and buffs floors.
- Cleans and maintains all floors, carpets, furniture, and fixtures.
- Washes windows, walls, blinds, rails, and air vents.
- Performs minor building and fixture repairs.
- Sanitizes, cleans, and restocks rest rooms.
- Empties trash containers.
- Removes all litter and debris from the ground.
- Salts and shovels snow and ice.
- Keeps outside area in good repair.
- Prepares rooms for meetings and special events.
- Checks for signs of break‑ins or attempted break‑ins and vandalism.
- May move, load, or unload heavy objects, supplies, or other materials.
8th grade education and three (3) years of general custodial and/or maintenance experience. Additional education may be considered for up to two (2) years of experience.
License RequiredValid Driver License.
Preferred Experience , Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities- Experience implementing the methods, materials, and equipment used in custodial work.
- Experience complying with safety rules and regulations.
- Experience using simple hand and power tools and equipment.

Benefits- Full‑time, Civil Service positions: 10 vacation days per year (increasing after 5 years of service), 1 sick day per month, 12 paid holidays per year.
- Public Safety – Sworn and Civilian positions: 20 vacation days per year, 3 personal days per year, 1 sick day per month, 12 paid holidays per year.
