The Public Works Janitor is responsible for cleaning and maintaining designated County buildings. This position performs routine janitorial and custodial duties to ensure clean, sanitary, and orderly conditions in County facilities. Work is performed under the direction of the Public Works Director, Public Works Foreman, or Public Works Office Manager and the employee typically works independently during evening hours after other building occupants have left for the day.

Works independently during evening hours; coordinates with Public Works staff on maintenance issues
(Performance of these functions is the reason the job exists. Assigned job tasks/duties are not limited to the essential functions).
- Perform routine cleaning of all assigned County buildings, including offices, hallways, meeting rooms, restrooms, and storage areas;
- Sweep, mop, and floors, shampoo carpets;
- Vacuum carpets and baseboards and keep mats clean;
- Dust and clean furniture;
- Empty wastebaskets and trash cans, washing when needed;
- Clean restrooms including mirrors, chrome fixtures, tile, sinks, urinals, toilets, floors, and under-sink plumbing;
- Clean interior and exterior windows and other glass surfaces such as vending machines, clocks, and TV screens;
- Scrub walls, woodwork, restroom partitions, wood paneling, and baseboards;
- Clean light fixtures, ceiling fans, and drinking fountains;
- Keep industrial paper goods stocked;
- Clean window sills on a weekly basis;
- Remove cobwebs;
- Clean and polish all door knobs and panic bars;
- Clean exterior of kitchen-type appliances;
- Clean air duct grates;
- Spot clean carpet and shampoo carpets as needed;
- Notify Public Works staff of maintenance problems;
- Janitorial and custodial methods, practices, and equipment;
- Cleaning products, both liquid and powdered, and their appropriate applications;
- Safe handling and storage of cleaning chemicals;
- Proper use and maintenance of custodial equipment; and
- Building maintenance procedures and safety practices.
- Operate vacuum cleaners, carpet cleaner and other custodial equipment;
- Use brooms, dust mops, mops, and buckets effectively;
- Use window washing equipment and ladders safely;
- Read and follow written and verbal instructions; and
- Complete assigned tasks thoroughly and independently.
- Perform cleaning duties in all assigned County buildings;
- Work independently during evening hours with minimal supervision;
- Lift up to 60 pounds;
- Work swing shift as required;
- Recognize and report maintenance issues to the appropriate supervisor;
- Follow safety procedures for handling cleaning chemicals and operating equipment;
- Interact professionally with County personnel; and
- Maintain regular and consistent punctuality and attendance.
Applicant must be 18 years or older and have a High School Diploma or equivalent.
Must possess a valid Class C driver’s license.
