Correctional Officer Trainee - Pioche

Job Summary

Correctional Officers maintain and supervise inmates in state Correctional facilities in a controlled humane environment. This position will be at a Conservation Camp in Pioche, a minimum‑security facility. Incumbents perform in a trainee capacity and acquire the knowledge, skills and abilities required in this occupation.

As part of the selection process, applicants must complete the Nevada Department of Corrections POST physical fitness test, background investigation, drug test, medical physical, psychological examination, and Correctional Officer Structured Interview.

• High school diploma or equivalent education and two years of work experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

• Conduct regular and unscheduled head counts of offenders during active hours in housing units, dormitories, work details, training activities, and call center to provide accurate counts and report to supervisors.
• Control, direct, and monitor offender activity and movement within specified areas to ensure security and safety for offenders, staff, and the public.
• Coordinate and direct offender work crews, evaluate work completion, and report to supervisors.
• Monitor and control offenders during transport to work assignments, classes, medical appointments, and court hearings using proper restraints and transport tactics.
• Intervene in and control acts of negative behavior and violence using restraints, firearms, or other devices as required.
• Conduct visual surveillance of security perimeter and monitor vehicle and foot traffic to detect abnormal or suspicious activity.
• Inspect persons and articles before admission using metal detector, x‑ray machine, or hand scanner.
• Perform random searches of offenders and visitors to prevent contraband introduction.
• Search offender housing, buildings, and personal property for weapons and contraband.
• Maintain proper use, control, and accountability of keys, caustic and flammable materials, tools, and equipment.
• Inspect locks, windows, bars, doors, fences, walls, fire suppression equipment, and ceilings for damage or breach of security.
• Operate state vehicles, including transportation vans and standard vehicles, requiring a valid driver’s license.
• Write reports on occurrences requiring supervisor action, incident or disciplinary reports, and mail handling.
• Brief supervisors and relief staff on institutional occurrences and concerns.
• Monitor assigned areas such as culinary, hallways, bathrooms, and offender rooms to maintain sanitary, health and safety standards.
• Operate communication devices such as two‑way radio and telephone to convey information.
• Complete offender movement sheets.
• Answer questions of offenders and visitors concerning rules, regulations, and procedures.
• Perform related duties as assigned.

• Physical endurance for foot patrol, standing, and searches.

  Eligible due to public sector employment.
• Longevity Payments Eligibility:
  Employees who have received a performance rating of “standard” or better and have completed eight (8) or more years of continuous service are eligible for longevity pay.
