Overview
The Nevada Division of Child and Family Services (DCFS) is recruiting a Group Supervisor 2 for the Caliente Youth Center (CYC), a 48‑bed secure facility for male and female youth aged 12 to 18 located in Caliente, NV. The center’s goal is to promote positive self‑growth, alter behaviors, attitudes, values and ways of thinking through education, therapeutic treatment and appropriate medical and mental health services.
The position is full‑time and may involve swing shifts, weekends, and hours outside the standard 8 a.m. – 5 p.m. window.
- Supervise the activities of youths within the assigned unit; observe work habits, social behavior, and attitude to ensure compliance with institutional rules and regulations.
- Provide assistance and direction to youths in completing assignments, maintaining acceptable behavior, proper dress, and personal hygiene.
- Participate as a member of the treatment team to implement treatment plans, and document progress or problems in youths’ development.
- Conduct intake interviews, review case history files, and complete required intake forms and documents concerning personal, medical, and family history.
- Supply immediate needs such as clothing, supplies, and room assignment; orient and instruct youths on unit rules and regulations.
- Conduct physical searches of persons and possessions for unauthorized articles and contraband.
- Perform security checks to ensure safety and security of residents and the facility; conduct head counts and room and body searches; check locks on windows and doors; secure the location of residents to prevent escape and detect presence of controlled substances, contraband, or weapons.
- Respond to emergency situations such as searching for runaway youths and applying first aid; implement appropriate verbal, behavioral, or physical interventions to control aggressive or violent behavior according to established laws, policies, and procedures.
- Maintain individual case records of youths’ behaviors and activities; complete incident reports, chronological reports, accountability lists, off‑ground reports, personal account logs, money withdrawal requests, and clothing file sheets for review by staff and placement in the ward’s case file.
- Instruct youths in life, educational, and vocational skills using prescribed methods; provide vocational and pre‑employment training in areas such as fire suppression, culinary processes, laundry work, and first aid procedures; assist youths with homework and monitor, evaluate, and report progress.
- Participate in activities and act as a role model; officiate at events; provide individual or team instruction and explanation of rules; secure and set up equipment; arrange and provide transportation as required; coordinate schedules with the facility’s overall program and security needs.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in psychology, social work, sociology, counseling and guidance, human services, social services, education, criminal justice, or a closely related field and at least one year of experience working with the public or clients that included coordinating or supervising work, people, or activities in a custodial, employment program, therapeutic, educational, recreational program, or correctional setting;
OR graduation from high school or equivalent education and three years of experience working with the public or clients; OR one year as a Group Supervisor I in Nevada State service; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience as described above.
Security techniques involving the custodial care of youth to provide a safe atmosphere for youth and staff; institutional rules, regulations, policy and procedures; rules and equipment associated with sporting and recreational activities; health and safety guidelines applicable to a juvenile justice facility; interviewing techniques; non‑violent crisis intervention techniques; basic principles of treatment and therapeutic approaches such as behavior modification and anger management;
