Position: F/T Fireman- Assistant Chief (Mon-Fri 6:30am-2:30pm)

Reports To: Chief Custodian

Location: Wilmington Manor

Work Year: 12 Months

Compensation: Refer to Custodial Salary Scale

FLSA Status: Non Exempt

Position Goal

Performs the fireman duties assigned by the Chief Custodian or Administrator; provides services that offer clean, comfortable, healthful, safe, and attractive buildings for students and staff. Assumes a major responsibility for the operation and maintenance of heating system.

Minimum Requirements
  • High School Diploma or Equivalent preferred.
  • Physical ability to perform essential functions, including lifting, pushing, and moving up to 50 pounds; repeating stooping, twisting, bending; working in extreme temperatures or weather conditions.
  • Regular attendance is essential.
  • Neat and clean appearance.
  • Ability to communicate professionally and effectively with others.
  • Willingness to accept additional responsibilities and prioritize with minimal guidance.
  • Ability to get along with adults and students.
  • Good moral character: honest, dependable, courteous.
  • Ability to follow instructions and procedures; inquire before acting on unfamiliar items.
  • Ability to read basic operating instructions, write reports, and maintain records.
  • Use of technology related to the position (email, data management, work order software, school management systems, etc.).
  • A valid driver's license is desirable.
  • Acceptable Criminal Background Report and no entries on the Child Abuse Registry.
  • Must hold or be in the process of obtaining a custodian‑fireman certificate (90 hours) within a specified time limit.
  • Prefer two years of successful experience as a custodian.
  • Must be able to work beyond regular hours when required.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Operate boilers, burners, ventilation, and mechanical equipment.
  • Operate grounds equipment, including mowers and grass trimmers.
  • Assist with snow removal as needed.
  • Assist in all maintenance and minor repair of mechanical equipment and furniture, including replacement of small window glass.
  • Assist in custodial cleaning as outlined in the custodian's position guide.
  • Perform minor maintenance repairs to building facilities and replacement of small window glass.
  • Respond to emergency requests at any time, such as snow removal, flooding conditions, burst pipes, etc.
  • Maintain regular attendance.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned, including but not limited to custodian tasks.
Essential Personnel

This position is considered essential. Employees are required to be at work for emergencies during and outside the scheduled workday, including weekends and holidays, for duties such as:

  • Snow removal.
  • Flooding in the building(s).
  • Response to alarms.
  • Water damage after a storm.
Physical Demands

The employee must be able to lift, push, and move up to 50 pounds; perform repetitive stooping, twisting, and bending; and work in extreme temperatures or weather conditions. The job also requires frequent use of hands and fingers, standing, walking, sitting, and normal vision abilities.

Standard Requirements
  • Satisfactory Criminal Background Check must be less than 1 year old.
  • DE Child Protection Registry Report.
  • TB Test less than 1 year old.
  • Mandatory direct deposit of paycheck.
  • Signed Social Security card required by the State of Delaware for payroll processing.
  • I-9 Form with appropriate identification.
