Under general supervision, the successful candidate is responsible for keeping the premises of the school building and grounds in a clean and orderly condition to support the education, extracurricular and co-curricular programs of the school district. The applicant must be reliable and be able to follow instruction. Snow removal is an essential function (requirement) for all custodial positions in the District.

Key Responsibilities
  • Maintain appearance and cleanliness of floors, carpets and common areas (washing, stripping, waxing, vacuuming, shampooing, mopping, polishing, scrubbing).
  • Maintain clean and sanitary conditions and supplies in restrooms and kitchen areas in each assigned building.
  • Wash and scrub walls, ceilings, lavatory fixtures, windows, drinking fountains, drains, lights, light fixtures and painted surfaces.
  • Remove spots, stains and graffiti from floors, walls, woodwork, furniture, carpets and fixtures.
  • Clean, dust and polish woodwork, furniture, glass and other items.
  • Empty and clean wastepaper baskets and other refuse containers.
  • Clean whiteboards, chalkboards, trays and erasers.
  • Perform minor or routine repairs in and around each assigned building.
  • Remove snow and treat sidewalks and building entrances and other grounds as required.
  • Operate power sweepers, polishers, scrubbers, vacuums, snow blowers and other equipment.
  • Move and adjust chairs, desks, tables, supplies, furniture and equipment.
  • Set and reset classrooms and common areas before and after activities.
  • Move, assemble or disassemble tables, chairs, equipment or other items.
  • Receive deliveries and distribute to appropriate areas.
Floor Specialist (if assigned)
  • Perform routine cleaning, dust mopping, wet mopping, stripping, waxing, buffing, and burnishing of vinyl composite tile (VCT) floors.
  • Vacuum, spot clean, shampoo and extract carpets in classrooms, offices and hallways/stairwells.
  • Operate and maintain industrial floor equipment including auto-scrubbers, burnishers, vacuums and stripping machines.
  • Conduct comprehensive floor restoration projects during evenings, weekends and school vacations (summer break and vacations).
  • Ensure floors are safe to walk on, properly cleaning spills and removing trip hazards. Apply proper disinfectants. Use appropriate signage while working.
  • Move furniture and equipment in classrooms and halls to prepare for cleaning.
  • Notify supervisors of damaged floors, safety hazards or equipment malfunctions. Monitor performance of equipment and components and alert the Lead Custodian of problems and suggest improvements.
  • Maintain security, and monitor/limit access to buildings in accordance with established policies and procedures.
  • Execute safe work procedures associated with assigned work.
  • Perform any other tasks and/or duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent; custodial experience preferred.
  • Ability to apply information from a material safety data sheet as it relates to hazardous materials.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs frequently and over 50 lbs occasionally.
  • Physical requirements:

    bending, twisting, squatting and kneeling; sufficient written and verbal communication skills.

Selection Process

The interview process includes an initial interview followed by interviews with school administration and the Superintendent of Schools. The final step is recommendation to the School Board. Only selected applicants will be contacted.
