About

the Position

This position is based at Pelham Memorial School. Under general supervision, the successful candidate is responsible for keeping the premises of the school building and grounds clean and orderly to support the educational, extracurricular, and co‑curricular programs of the district. The applicant must be reliable and able to follow instructions. Snow removal is an essential function for all custodial positions in the district.

Responsibilities
  • Maintain appearance and cleanliness of floors, carpets, and common areas (washing, stripping, waxing, vacuuming, shampooing, mopping, polishing, scrubbing)
  • Maintain clean and sanitary conditions and supplies in restrooms and kitchen areas in each assigned building
  • Wash and scrub walls, ceilings, lavatory fixtures, windows, drinking fountains, drains, lights, light fixtures, and painted surfaces
  • Remove spots, stains, and graffiti from floors, walls, woodwork, furniture, carpets, and fixtures
  • Clean, dust, and polish woodwork, furniture, glass, and other items
  • Empty and clean wastepaper baskets and other refuse containers
  • Clean whiteboards, chalkboards, trays, and erasers
  • Perform minor routine repairs around each assigned building
  • Remove snow and treat sidewalks, building entrances, and other grounds as required
  • Operate power sweepers, polishers, scrubbers, vacuums, snow blowers, and other equipment
  • Move, adjust, assemble, or disassemble chairs, desks, tables, supplies, furniture, and equipment to support cleaning
  • Set and reset classrooms and common areas before and after activities
  • Receive deliveries and distribute to appropriate areas
  • Maintain security, monitor/limit access to buildings per established policies and procedures
  • Ensure safe work procedures are followed for assigned tasks
  • Perform other tasks and/or duties as assigned
Floor Specialist Key Duties (Optional)
  • Hard floor maintenance: routine cleaning, dust mopping, wet mopping, stripping, waxing, buffing, and burnishing of vinyl composite tile (VCT)
  • Carpet care: vacuum, spot clean, shampoo, extract carpets
  • Equipment operation: operate and maintain industrial floor equipment (auto‑scrubbers, burnishers, vacuums, stripping machines)
  • Deep cleaning projects during evenings, weekends, and school vacations
  • Safety and sanitization: ensure floors are safe, clean spills, remove trip hazards, apply disinfectants, use signage
  • Setup and support: move furniture/equipment to prepare for cleaning
  • Reporting: notify supervisors of damaged floors, safety hazards, equipment malfunctions; monitor performance and suggest improvements
Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent; custodial experience preferred
  • Ability to apply information from a material safety data sheet for hazardous materials
  • Capable of lifting up to 50 lbs frequently and over 50 lbs occasionally
  • Physical requirements:

    bending, twisting, squatting, kneeling
  • Written and verbal communication skills as required
