Position Purpose

Under the direct supervision of the Head Grounds Person and Director of Facilities, to perform routine maintenance, care, cleaning, and operations of the school district grounds, open spaces, turf, and related facilities, in such a way as to ensure a safe and healthy environment for students, staff, and community members.

Essential Job Functions
  • Perform routine maintenance on lawn and power equipment.
  • Carry out the seeding, fertilizing, top dressing, soil conditioning, watering, and the pest and weed control of athletic fields and open spaces. Plant lawns, trees, shrubs,and flowers.
  • Mow and maintain athletic fields and open spce areas; weed, clean, maintain sprinkler systems, and assist in the repair and installation of sprinkler lines and heads.
  • Maintain and adjust specialized turf care equipment and tools, including electric motors, pumps, sprinklers, tractors, mowers, and irrigation systems.
  • Assist with setup of various events when needed.
  • Line game fields as needed across the district.
  • Perform routine building maintenance and minor repairs.
  • Open, close, and secure district buildings as needed.
  • Cover for building custodians as needed.
  • Perform larger scaled projects and repairs.
  • Unload supply vehicles as needed.
  • Notify the appropriate building and district personnel when emergency or unusual situations occur.
  • Assist with ice/snow removal with both mechanical and manual means as needed.
  • Be familiar with, and execute, safe work practices associated with assigned work.
  • Remain available for emergencies, alarm calls, snow removal, or additional work and/or overtime, as required.
  • Maintain effective relations with building staff, students, contractors, and the public

Equipment

Uses hand tools of trade and related power equipment, including saws, drills, routers, planers, sanders, jointers, and stationary power equipment.

Knowledge,

Skills and Abilities
  • Knowledge of fundamental tools, materials, practices, maintenance, methods and procedures in the carpentry, plumbing, and electrical trades.
  • Knowledge of building code conformance standards for carpentry, plumbing, electricity, electrical installation, and repair.
  • Knowledge of occupational safety and health laws and regulations.
  • Ability to follow oral or written work orders from supervisor, and to coordinate work with others.
  • Ability to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral or diagrammatic form.
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide all units of measure.
  • Ability to describe orally or in writing maintenance or repair problems as needed.
  • Ability to troubleshoot, problem solve and resolve electrical or electricity issues.
  • Ability to report work orally or in writing to supervisor as required.
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with students, staff and others contacted in the course of work.
Safety Requirements
  • Follows all applicable safety rules, procedures and regulations governing the proper use of tools and power equipment used.
  • Wears appropriate safety gear.
Travel Requirements

Frequent travel between schools, or between schools and central offices, may be required.

Physical and Mental Demands, Work Hazards
  • Able to walk, stand, and be able to work in a physically demanding job for 4-8 hour shifts
  • Able to give and receive verbal and written instructions.
  • Able to frequently squat, stoop, kneel, bend, twist, or reach above head.
  • Able to lift and/or move up to 50 lbs., including cleaning supplies, pails, and bags/boxes; and occasionally lift or move up to 80 lbs., including bags of salt/sand, and furniture.
  • Able to push or pull items such as tables, bleachers, scrubbing machines, etc.
  • Able to shovel snow as required, treat ice covered walkways, and operate snowblower.
  • Able to work in poor weather conditions, including heat, cold, rain, or snow.

Qualifications Profile

Any combination of education and experience providing the required skill and knowledge for successful performance would be qualifying. Typical qualifications would be equivalent to:

  • High School Diploma or GED preferred.
  • Successful experience in building and grounds maintenance, and repair.
  • Motor Vehicle Operator’s license or ability to provide own transportation.
  • Able to work independently or with others.
