Position Overview
Southern Connecticut State University (SCSU) is recruiting a full‑time Stationary Engineer for the Facilities Operations Department located in New Haven, CT.

As a Stationary Engineer, you will independently perform a full range of tasks involved in operating a moderate or large‑sized heating or power plant, or serve as a technical maintenance and repair expert on powerhouse and allied facilities.
Responsibilities- Upon starting a shift, receive operating instructions from the outgoing shift engineer.
- Inspect boiler‑room gauges, indicators, charts, and operation records.
- Issue instructions to subordinates as necessary.
- Perform periodic and special tests, checks, and make necessary adjustments.
- Maintain and repair mechanical equipment such as bearings, glands, bolts, rings, condenser tubes, gaskets, valves, stuffing boxes, and other parts.
- Inspect and repair generating equipment, ice machinery, hot‑water heaters, laundry equipment, pumps, fans, compressors, electronic equipment, and miscellaneous mechanical service equipment.
- Supervise simple boiler‑water analyses and determine necessary treatment.
- Calculate and record operating data; perform tests for fuel specific gravity and gas leaks.
- Add water‑treatment chemicals to boilers.
- Assist in general building maintenance and repair.
- Inspect and repair steam traps and remove pipe‑insulation materials.
- Perform related duties as required.
- Supervise maintenance and repair of boiler and boiler‑room equipment, including feed pumps and fuel injectors or stokers.
- Supervise tending of boiler by others, issuing instructions, inspecting equipment conditions, and checking gauges and operation records.
- Knowledge of operating, maintaining, and repairing boilers, generators, and related mechanical equipment.
- Interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills.
- Ability to utilize computer software and related tools.
- Three (3) years of experience in the operation, maintenance, and repair of steam boilers or significant auxiliary boiler‑room or power‑plant equipment.
- Possession of an S‑2 license or an OEZ certification.
Physical Requirements
- May be required to possess and retain appropriate current licenses, permits, and/or certifications.
- Must have adequate strength, stamina, agility, visual and auditory acuity; physical fitness necessary to perform duties.
- Physical examination may be required.
- Exposure to dust, noise, heat, and risk of injury from equipment.
- May be required to complete an asbestos‑removal program following EPA guidelines.
- May need protective equipment such as respirators and safety goggles.
