Introduction
The Connecticut Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services (DMHAS) is seeking two full‑time (37.5 hours/week) Custodians (PCN 76639, 129147) for the CT Mental Health Center (CMHC) in New Haven.
Schedule- First shift: 7:30 AM – 3:30 PM

- Provides general custodial cleaning in patient areas
- Dusts, mops, sweeps, scrubs, strips, waxes, and polishes floors using appropriate equipment
- Cleans and polishes glass, windows, woodwork, walls, furniture, and metal surfaces
- Collects and disposes of trash and soiled laundry
- Reports repair needs and performs minor maintenance tasks
- Perform custodial tasks and maintenance of areas such as dormitories, classrooms, offices, auditoriums, wards, kitchens, dining rooms, and lavatories, including outdoor areas (e.g., trash around buildings).
- Dust, mop, sweep, scrub, strip, wax, and polish floors using appropriate equipment such as floor polishers and buffers.
- Wash, dust, and polish glass including windows, woodwork, walls, furniture, and metal equipment.
- Make beds.
- Check, mark, store, and issue linens, blankets, and clothing (limited to an individual's work area; not including counting or inspection for a larger area).
- Collect and count soiled laundry.
- Distribute, empty, and sterilize glassware, wash basins, and bedpans.
- Sweep walkways.
- Collect and dispose of trash.
- Report needs for repairs.
- Perform minor maintenance.
- Run errands.
- Inspect buildings for damage and report conditions to supervisor.
- Change light bulbs and replace fuses as needed.
- Lubricate or tighten door hinges, drawers, cabinets, and other hardware.
- Replace ceiling or floor tiles as necessary.
- Remove snow and ice from stairways and walkways around buildings; sand and salt stairways and walkways as appropriate.
- Move furniture and/or set up classrooms as requested.
- Perform related duties as required.

Any experience and training which would provide the knowledge, skills and abilities listed above.
Preferred Qualifications- Experience with infection prevention/control cleaning procedures.
- Experience with keeping cleaning supplies safe while working around others.
- Experience moving furniture.
- Experience removing snow and ice from stairways and walkways.
- Experience performing minor maintenance on tools and equipment used in daily work.
- Experience with deep cleaning and disinfecting a psychiatric or hospital environment.
Incumbents in this class may be required by the appointing authority to possess and retain appropriate current licenses, permits, and/or certifications.
Physical Requirements- Must have adequate physical strength, stamina, physical agility, visual and auditory acuity, and must maintain such physical fitness as to be able to perform the duties of the class.
- A physical examination may be required.
Incumbents in this class may be required to lift moderate to heavy weights and may be exposed to risk of injury from equipment and/or individuals.
